Sony seem to have got their Mojo back, in the camera market at least

Sony are on a bit of a run at the moment, they have released some stunning kit at Photokina.  The RX1 looks incredible, but a bit to pricey for me (£2.5k for a fixed 35mm f2 full frame compact!)

The release of a 10-18mm f4 and 35mm 1.8 have filed in the gaps that I needed, I will probably sell all of my Canon SLR kit now.  May chuck in the Sony 5N for a 6, its almost the perfect camera but has some handling niggles, the 6 looks ace!  Much more exciting than the Apple event Smile

I don't use it for work anymore, and it costs me £250 a year to insure.  Its all so heavy I don't want to pick it up when I leave the house.  The Nex 5N was a revelation, it just needs a few handling tweaks that the 6 has to be perfect.

I do like Canons little mirrorless, but it will be years until they catch up with NEX for native lenses.  They have also been guilty of the cardinal tech sin of vapourware, just cos they announce something you have no idea when it will actually be available!

Agreed. I've been quite positive about their stuff for a while, much to the disdain of my buddies. I was a Nikon man before that. They're all Canon fans, to a man.

I think Sony is one of the few brands that I have any loyalty towards though, I've always had fantastic service from them. Plus the missus likes them as a brand, so I don't have to sell Sony gadgets to her as hard as some of the others.

She stood shaking her head at a Sonos display today, if I'd told her that Sonos was an off-shoot of Sony she'd have been trying to persuade me to buy it! Smile

Hopefully the Nex-5 range will continue to come down in price, as she wants one of them for her birthday.

Looks great. I'd have it if I had the money! Smile

As for Camera brand fans. Dumb to the last. I have a modest Canon 40D and a few lenses. I have no brand loyalty to anyone (other than the irritation of having to sell lenses). It's silly.

If Sony, Pentax, Nikon, Panasonic etc come out with something when I am due an upgrade...that's what I will get!

(I did give Sony the elbow for compacts a while back because of "Memory sticks" though....I assume and hope that they have converted??)

Agree. Very impressive announcements. Canon needs to catch up. Or I will have to abandon them when I change my 20d for a smaller camera some time soon. I do net want to do that and really hope I will not have to.

Selling off my Canon kit, I *could* buy an RX1 and have change, but alas I seem to be getting sensible with age.

Funny you should mention Memory Sticks, I had the same opinion and the SD card slot was the tipping point for me selling my 7D and buying the NEX 5N

Depends why you have loyalty. Sony have sorted me out when I've had defective kit, and have gone above and beyond with the service they provided on various occasions. That gets them my loyalty, for the time being. Other camera brands (and brands who also sell cameras) haven't done that when I've had issues, so I wouldn't touch their stuff with a bargepole.

I do agree about the whole Nikon vs Canon thing though. When I first started, and went for a Nikon, some of my buddies seemed EDITED-off that I'd 'gone to the other side'. That puzzled me.

Brand loyalty is a funny thing.  I used to really love Canon but couldn't think why.  I think it came from a 13 year old Paul being obsessed with F1 buying and building models of Mansells Williams.  FW14B was my fave...

When I bought my first SLR buying Canon was a no brainer, Nikon hadn't transitioned over to CMOS yet and were getting hammered.  When you stop and think about it though, its weird how opinions are formed.

I don't think it's only about brand loyalty when it comes to SLR cameras. You already would have built up a decent lens collection. It's far cheaper to just upgrade the body.

RE: Sony

Now you see I've always been an Olympus man.  I even still have a couple of film OMs.

Mind you with DSLRs I moved over to Nikon because I really didn't like the way Olympus were going.
