Microsoft has found a great advertising opportunity. At least it has highlighted why we should be concerned. Google has changed over the years, there's no denying that. In fact, Microsoft is one of the world's most ethical companies, higher than Google.

Over here there's quite a cottage industry, mostly scam artists I expect, of people provding services that boost your business's profile to the top of Google search lists as well, the idea being you do a search for, I dunno, "speaker cables" and "Joey's Speaker Cables" comes up on page 1 of the search not page 99.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Google did the same internally.

Yep, search engine optimisation.  You do get legit web developers do it, but you do get scam artists too.  I get many emails lining my spam inbox about it.

Google has been known to rank it's own content higher, a little while a go they get caught out for ranking Google+ content ahead of Twitter content.

I always think it's bad form when companies mention their competitors in ads, but I guess there is no way around it here.

While we're on the subject, sort of, any suggestions re alternatives to Google for search - apart from Bing, Yahoo!, Ask and AltaVista?

Alternatives to Google? I'm sure if you type that into Google search....

As for paid ads, Microsoft were charging my friend's business 50p a hit 10 years ago to go top of the search list. It's nothing new.
