Re: Real Madrid

I was thinking along the lines of good business or not. Even though they've spent £170m, it will pay back in increased revenues and probably better results on the pitch.

It won't Prof, trust me on that. Laugh out very loud!!

"Owen against that defence"? Owen couldn't score a goal in a relegation battle last season! He is perhaps the most over rated player of the last 10 years. He's never scored 20 league goals in a season. He won't play 20 games for the Mancs next season. Not a bad inclusion for United - he hasn't cost anything but it seems a bit desperate. I'm sure if Benzema had said oui, Owen would not have been invited for breakfast.

Back to Joel's OP. Real Madrid have gone a bit mad with their euros but I agree, they will get a lot back from merchandise and image rights. I fancy Ronaldo to struggle a bit. I doubt that he will be on penalties so that will lessen his goals tally. Apart from his galactico season (the year before last), he has averaged about 15 league goals a season. Last year he scored league goals at The Hawthorns and Old Trafford only. He's obviously a special player but he won't be the best player in his team next season (Kaka) let alone the best in the league (Messi, Iniesta).

Re: Real Madrid

Much as i'm FAR from a Ronaldo fan, and am loathe to defend him, it has to be said that he has an excellent scoring record for a midfielder....

Re: Real Madrid

I wonder how they plan to pay for them all.  ?186m so far?  Most deals are done on a deferred payment basis.  Do you foresee Manure, Milan and Lyon petitioning for the winding up of Real next season when they fail to pay the next instalment?

Clare, he hasn't been a midfielder for about four years.

Re: Real Madrid

Debatable considering the wilder formations on show the past few seasonsStick out tongue

He's certainly doesn't play a traditional striker role.....Not nearly enough chance to show-off if he stayed in the box!

You see if I had said something like that, this time next year everyone will be lauding Michael Owen for his record 56 goals season, Manchester City will be looking to pay £156 million for him and I'll just be sitting there muttering to myself about how I wasn't serious...

I was at the England v Sweden game when Owen's leg 'went': really nasty stuff.

Re: Real Madrid

Yeah that was awful.

To be fair, I would be very happy to see a resurgence in him - would be great for England, though it would grate of course that he was at Man U (no offence Angel). However, as of the last few years, he just seems to have been cursed poor fella.

Re: Real Madrid

Real have a shedload of money. IIRC they have some backing from the government or ex members of the government. In 2007 they also signed an image rights deal with Adidas for 762 MILLLION Euros... God knows how much they get from Audi etc???
