For the past 2 years or so I've been planning a visit, with my bro, to the Shetlands, but work and home commitments have prevented us from going before now.

Now we are planning a trip for the weekend over the next couple of months, or at the very least, next spring. However, when I mentioned this to little'un she burst into tears. Some may say it's crocodile tears or kidology, but she was totally distraught. She is a bright kid and can understand her fragility with me not being there.

When I asked why she's so upset, she said she'll miss me. It's lovely to hear but must understand I have a life beyond work, hi-fi and home.

Mrs. P understands why I need to go but isn't totally happy.

This is something my bro and I must do... need to grasp the opportunity before I'm old and senile.

Joys of family life.

RE: No pleasing the missus and little'un.

My father used to visit the Shetland Islands yearly on a fishing trip with his father and five brothers. Suffice to say, fish was on the menu for the following few weeks! Not great, as I don't like fish...

Anyway, years later, his father and two of his brothers have now passed on, and the trips have been abandoned.

Do it PP. None of us know whether we will get to do this sort of thing on a regular basis, or whether we only have one shot. Your other half will understand, and children need to get used to a parent being away every now and again.

I think if there is something you want to do together you need to do it. If you don't and something happens, you will have some resentment towards the people who stopped you from doing it. IMO there is nothing wrong with this as long as you leave plenty of time for your wife and kids, after all these people should be your first priority in life surely, I know mine are.

You only get one life and it seems to be going rather quickly............ so fit in as much as you can.

Yup, also want to travel to Hanover, Germany over the next couple of years. Had recent contact with the Bundesarchiv, Freiberg to help with the trip.

Both little'un and OH know I'll go regardless...

But the trips would be made easier with their full consent.

My wife regularly goes camping with her brownies pack.  In August she'll be going away for a hen-weekend with her friends.  I see no difference to what you're doing.

A person needs some kind of individual purpose beyond work>home>bringing up kids, even if those three things are your top priority.

You are not a bad dad for wanting to do something 'out of the box', away from your wife and child for just a while.

It's sweet that your little girl says she will miss you and is upset: it's testament to the fact that normally you are there for her.

As others have said, you need your own time. The only snag I can think of with that is if you've not had family holiday time? Have you had recent trips with the missus and sprog?

No family hols this year but making sure to allocate some quality time with both. Yesterday arranged work for the morning and in the afternoon we visited the Imperial War Museum.

Next week, whether permitting, we'll have the afternoon and evening at the south coast.

It's a fine juggling act of work and keeping the family occupied.

In light of that I retract my former input, you can't justify gadding off with your brother here there and everywhere when you haven't had a family holiday, your priorities are all to EDITED.

You think, Hey wifey I'm going to the Shetlands with me brother on a jolly and we may go to Hanover too.

You and the kids can have a day at the seaside and a trip to the IWM.........

No - I run my own small business from home. Given that care for my disabled OH, I don't drink much, no clubs. Think that a little bit of ME time is in order. Unlike your comments.

Why did you ask for opinion on the matter then? Someone was bound to say it's not reasonable.

Well you asked for opinions and I have just given you one based on the information provided. My second post is no different to my first in that it said if you leave time for your family its not a problem, it seems from an outsiders point of view that this is not the case and its an unlevel playing field. Of course these comments are purely based on the small amount of information on this thread, I don't know you or anything about your life and what you do so I could be talking tripe. Sorry if your offended but just saying it as I see it.
