My birthday is coming up soon & i've decided that i want a new stereo for my car, i was looking at the internet & came accross this JVC i went to the shop on friday but i was told that he didn't have any in stock but showed me this discounted Clarion which i am now quite interested in & will probably buy.

I am not really interested in the radio, so i'm not prepared to pay more for DAB, but what i want is ipod connectivity & a built in satnav, does anyone have any oppinions or advice.

Here is a photo of my dashboard.

How about hunting down a forum for owners of your make/model of car and see what the recommendations are.  Other people's success-stories/disaster-stories might steer you in the right direction, and more importantly away from the wrong one.  No offence but just about the last place I'd ask for advice is Halfords, if the staff at my local branch are typical.  Don't get me wrong they always come across as nice lads, but really I wouldn't trust their opinion on anything remotely technical.

I did go to halfords & i wasn't impressed by their service,  i am now going to deal with car audio center :)  they have a better selection, i have been looking at both models tonight & i now think i may go for the JVC because it has face off but it doesn't have a rear usb port which the clarion does so you can route the wire into your glove box for your ipod, so i have to decide,

No face off & rear usb port, or

Face off & no rear usb port.

Thanks for the birthday wish btw but it's next friday (14th)

Can't give you advice on either of these specific models, but I'd recommend a good quality ipod cable if you go for the rear mount options.  I've bought a few cheap ones from ebay and they all disintegrate after a month or two - you dont want to remove the headunit to replace the cable.

Also -  what size Ipod have you got?  If its a small capacity one, you could just use the SD card slot as they are pretty cheap these days (but try it, as some headunits have limits on number of tracks, and the navigation to music can be a little clunky)

Finally - most important - take your Ipod to a shop and test out how good the interface is with the headunit.  I have a single din Pioneer and the Ipod interface is pretty good.  Some I tried were terrible - very slow and clunky.

Other Brands are available, don't limit yourself to those two just because they're the only ones you've looked at. You might find one with the combination of face-off/rear USB that you're looking for.

I did look at other brands last night including kenwood but that is £100 more than the jvc & clarion & doesn't have face off, so it just left me evan more confused, i've also looked at alpine & sony.

Pioneer's a good shout, depends on your budget really. I can't tell what car that is from the picture, but you might find with a new stereo you'll quickly discover what the limits of the speakers are.

The car is a skoda fabia (i purchased it for economical reasons) i'm really looking for a double din unit with ipod or usb control & built in satnav, both the clarion & jvc are around £500, i did look at the pioneer last night & decided it was too expensive.

I've had another look around & i am now tempted by this kenwood which seems to tick all the boxes, i can get it for less than £600 on amazon i'm not sure about the two star review though.

Has anybody got any comments or views about this model.
