As half the population are going back to work tomorrow, myself included, i was thinking earlier about my first job i had. It was 26 years ago, i left school being in the guinea pig year of 1986 and i walked away with an uninspiring but not suprising 2 C's and 2 D's.

I cant say i enjoyed my first real job working 40 hrs a week, it was a job i was half interested in and it was never going to be a career path, i never stayed friends with anyone there, and the highlight was payday in cash on a friday where i would go to the local fish and chip shop to get a good portion of cod, chips and picked egg. The journey i done on motorbike was 30 mins give or take and if it was raining or cold i would be a miserable swine all day and longed to have the easy life of home, paper rounds and car cleaning which would make me 60 odd pound a week. I was even banned from listening to the Sony Walkman, health and safety  banging head against wall

Thats about it really, oh and to say i was ink screen printing t's, jumbers, banners, balloon's, anything you could print on i done, a chore, it makes tomorrow look like a bed of roses, yep i'm loong forward to it  hello or goodbye

RE: Memories of your first job

I was 9 years old and it was my Mother's birthday. I didn't have any money for a present and panic was setting in. My cousin was 10 and that much more mature, so he suggested we went to the local golf club to try our hand at caddying. We duly gained employment with Rufus and Arthur, a couple of elderly gentlemen who took pity on our plight. Rufus had a trolley, so my cousin caddied for him, while I had the bag carrying duty for Arthur. Even worse, Rufus was willing a pay a pound while Arthur offered 50p.

As luck would have it, my cousin tipped the trolley over 3 times on the way round. Meanwhile Arthur had one of his best rounds ever, so we managed to renegotiate and I got a pound and my cousin 50p. Then it was down the shop to get my Mother a pound box of Milk Tray for the princely sum of 94pence.

Those were the days!

Oh Gawd, I rememeber that.

My first task was to be lowered into a tank that had 2.5t of Tallow in it, which had to be emptied with a bucket on a rope.

My second task was to clean the soot from the chimney and inside of a Kiln.

My career could only go up hill from there.

Said the man with a string of 50" TVs to his name...

In an evolutionary sort of way I'm still doing my first job, it's not at the same place or working for the same employer but there's a direct line tracing all the way back to the day I left school.

Guess just born lucky!  Something like that anyway.  Had my first appointment at a employment agency today!  So I guess I will soon be in the rat race!  Since leaving University my mental health went down hill, now I have a lot of people looking out for me, so onwards and upwards.  Smile

RE: Memories of your first job

My first job was working for my dad washing up by hand. Three to four hours at £1 an hour. I was fourteen. The hours got longer as I got older...
