I realise times are tough these days, but have you noticed the proliferation of random marketing email?
I tend to get a large number of emails and it's tricky to do anything meaningful in a working day if you read them all, so I have to be rather selective (my missus will call me, rather than email, because I usually don't get time to get to the non-urgent stuff).
Lately, however, I've noticed a huge increase in the number of marketing emails. I really don't like these, and am generally very good at clicking the "don't send me any guff box" (or unticking the "send me guff box" in the case of less reputable websites).
In the last 6 months I've had:
* repeated emails from carhire sites that I've actively not subcribed to;
* emails from a restaurant that I complained about a poor meal to (the sole email contact was to complain, so they obviously ignored my complaint and added my contact details to their mailshot list);
* an email from Jessops today - I bought a telephoto lens from them in June 2008;
* an email from Swiss Air advertising their cargo / freight wing (I booked a business class flight with them in 2009)
the list goes on.
Even this website has been guilty of mis-using my details in the past (although they were very nice about it and it was a one-off). It's a real pain as there's no way to categorically say "I ticked the don't send me emails" box - it would be wonderful if there was a single website that you could go on and unsubscribe from marketing emails from everyone on.
Anyway, rant over... As you were.
