Why is this 'interest' / 'hobby' generally male dominated? Not withstanding many female contributors.

Is it...?

Mrs. P loves music and the ma-in-law, a few weeks ago, went out and purchased a new all-in-one.

PP. What would happen if your wife decided that some part of the hi-fi needed upgrading, read some hi-fi mags, asked some questions on a forum, discussed it's HAF, auditioned the new kit in various dealers, bought it, had it installed and sold the old stuff on ebay.

Imagine if she chastised other women on hi-fi forums with comments like "who wears the dresses in your house?" when they mentioned discusssing such decisions with their boyfriends or husbands.

Imagine going into hi-fi shops that are exclusively run by women and being asked "Alright love? Waiting for your wife to get here?" when you walk in and start looking around.

Knowing her as I do, she wouldn't. But if she decided then I wouldn't stop her.

The OP asked about hi-fi/AV being male dominated. In my experience, based on my family and friends, it ain't.

Most people like music and most people will have a small system that they'll replace if it breaks, that isn't the same as being "into hi-fi".

What he means is, why are we the only ones that spend all day obsessing about it? It's because we're geeks, which is typically a male characteristic.

I'm sorry to say, that's about the sum of it.

Most of the women I know, like music, but don't give a fiddlers fffffk what it's played on.....in fact that goes for most of the men as well.

The only three that are........all geeks (men).......2 computer programmers and an accountant!

Ps. I'm not a geek, but an eccentric.....which is different!  ohhh sure

RE: Male domination

It's because men and women are different and on the whole, they like different things. That's not remotely sexist, it's just plain fact, even though there is some overlap. There's probably a handful of men on forums devoted to hobbies and activities which are stereotyically female, just like there are a handful of women on HiFi forums, IT forums, and motoring forums.

No, men, generally, prattle on about hi-fi, whereas the better halfs buy it and just listen to the music. Perhaps we could all learn something from that.

I think that's just your wife, I've never met a woman remotely interested in buying hi-fi, although my sample set probably isn't that much bigger than yours!

RE: Male domination

Now here's a strange but true story.

There's a guy I went to school with, who was married and had a daughter.

He came out as gay, and started a relationship with another man.

He and his boyfriend then both started living as women.

They are now living together as a lesbian couple, though not the most convincing looking women I've ever seen.

Not related, but the Emery picture reminded me.
