Lazy Language- Grrrr!

Whilst on the PC a few days ago, I had the telly wittering away in the background, on channel 4.

The announcer came on: "Coming up next on 4, it's Deal, then at five it's Come Dine." All said in a smarmy, M&S advert-style manner.

For some reason, my blood boiled instantly. Why does everything have to be abbreviated these days? Dunno why this irked me so much, but it did!

What next? The news being announced simply as 'The'?  Angry Angry Angry

Hoist by my own petard... doh!

And I think, before anyone says it, 'commuted' would have been a better choice of word than 'abbreviated'...!

One of my pet 'hates' is 'amecher' instead of 'ameteur'. Really winds one up I feel. No idea why but listen out for this very common misprenunciation. Now where is the whf spell-check ......?

Standards aren't what they were. My children went on away-weekend with school and on the Wednesday before they went we were invited to powerpoint presentation in the school hall. Nice big bullet-point on slide 2 telling the children to come into school on Friday and 'put there luggage bags in the sport's hall'. And this is a reputable high-school. One of the better ones in my area.

Deviating a little, but as we've gone that way: 'Chest of draws'. And the annoying West-countryism of saying "Oi've got an ideal."

And a post I've just read on the subject of Windows 8, elsewhere on the interweb, which comprised about three hundred words. There were a few full stops, but not a single comma throughout.

Grumble, mumble, harrumph.

Do you object to people in the West Country having ideals, or object to them having a regional accent?

I'm amazed how much copy I read on the internet these days, supposedly written by professional journalists, where it's clear no-one has bothered to read it through before hitting the 'send' button.

Don't they have sub-editors in the online world, and is the writing of our favourite and most celebrated hacks really as poor as it seems without the intervention of a good proof-reader?

I now have a mental image of a Somerset accented Martin Luther King, Jr. proclaiming to the world... "Oi've 'ad a dream" back in 1963.

Meanwhile, props(!) to BBC F1's Suzi Perry for pronouncing 'garage' correctly, unlike her predecessors, messrs Brundle and Humphrey: 'Garidge.'
