'Knowing' Chapter 6. Greatest chapter of all time? (Spoiler alert)
Absolutely blown away on all fronts by this scene (on BD). The bleak grey day, and the rain almost make me want to shiver. The flames reflected in Nic Cage's black coat when he's trying to rescue survivors. The VFX of the plane itself, one of the most realistic effects I've seen. And that's before we get to the sound.
Totally outstanding.
Knocks the beginning bank job scene of 'The Dark Knight' into a close second. (It's a shame certain scenes in 'Knowing' weren't shot in IMAX).
This is now my reference 'blow-my-friends-away-with-Blu-Ray' scene.
It's been panned a bit (Many times on this very forum), but I really enjoyed it.
I ordered it myself from Play, so hopefully it'll be here soon. I told my parents I'd ordered it, but maybe should have kept my mouth shut, they want to borrow it!
Im totally with you on this Chris, ive just put my review up on this forum under the KNOWING bluray, as for the plane crash scene its also the most realistic plane crash ive seen & heard in a movie, the sound made me pull my head back, outstanding & so was the Subway scene, defo also my demo disc for sure & like you say i thought the movie was great & i loved the ending.
And i also think that if there was any BD out there to justify bluray potential to people that dont think theres much difference between BR & standard DVD (yes i know a few tht'd argue the point) this is the disc for both PQ & AQ its a bluray poster as far as im concerned.
What did you think to the PQ Chris?

I hesitate to ask, but - terms of reference?

Well my reference point was catching the beginning to 'The Survivor' last night. An 80's movie with Robert Powell as the pilot and sole survivor of an air crash. (Didn't stay up for it, but it was on straight after 'Munich').
Possibly the least realistic plane crash ever shot to film. Possibly the least realistic anything ever shot to film.....
Only thing that jarred a bit with the crash in 'Knowing', was that when the wing hit the ground, it should have pitched the nose of the plane down into the ground. I didn't. It just scraped the wing on the ground like cheese on a grater, and the pitch of the plane didn't seem to be affected..... But it's a minor gripe.
The plane crash scene in Die hard 2,( looks even better on BD) Alive (thats another realistic scene), Flight of the phoenix crash wasnt to bad either.Andrew Everard:jase fox:its also the most realistic plane crash ive seen & heard in a movieI hesitate to ask, but - terms of reference?
Oh yes and not forgetting CASTAWAY thats a frighteningly realistic crash into the ocean..
No, I meant what are your terms of reference for the realism of how a plane crash looks and sounds? How many real plane crashes have you witnessed/experienced?

I thought it was very good, and my telly's a plain old vanilla 720P/50hz dinosaur.
I'm keen to see how these films all look when my telly croaks, and I'm able to buy a fancy shmancy 1080P/200hz, all-singing-all-dancing model.

I've watched all those 'black box' flight disaster programs if that helps......
I did say its the most realistic plane crash ive heard in a "movie" but i havnt been right next to a plane crash but ive watched dozens of reality documentarys of planes crashing with "original" sound of them crashing, very clear sound at that, some skidding down runways & then coming to an explosion, horrifying stuff!!Andrew Everard:No, I meant what are your terms of reference for the realism of how a plane crash looks and sounds? Hmmm...

Sorry, you lsot me there. You almost lost me before that as i thought everyhting about Knowing was pretty ropey. I missed the entire going-back-to-the-school-to-get-the-door-or-whatever sequence as i was busy staring into space contemplating...i forget. The mate i saw it with found my later confusion at what was going on most amusing.
Stll, takes all sorts.
Now, wheres my copy of Max Payne...
This was on the National Geographic Channel not Discovery... heheAndrew Everard:Hmmm...
