2 posts today, now removed I think. What the heck are they?

[Note from Mods - they're spam posts, we're removing them as fast as we see them - obviously don't click on any links in them   Smile ]

Thanks 'mods'. Will flag as offensive if that helps. Guessed the links may be bad news but this warning may help others to avoid issues?
Cheers

Strange.

I thought I had read that "New or Infrequent" member's posts were held (especially if they contain links) until mods 'vet' them and they go into the 'Trusted Authenticated Users' group. (Or something like that.)

This also seems to happen to a number of regular members too (judging by the number of blank 1st posts in many new threads lately).

So how can a spammer (as a 'New or Infrequent' user) get past the software if their frst ever post contains links?

Not quite - the trusted user group removes the 'captcha' on creating or commenting, but if the posts are being created by a human (which these seem to be) then all they have to do is fill in the captcha to post.  People pay sweatshops to do this stuff for hours on end.  If Mollom is sufficiently clever to spot the contents as being of a particular form (containing particular words or links, for example) then subsequent posts will *then* be queued for moderation.

As for blank posts, I think that's people using Internet Explorer in 'non-compatibility' mode.  Can't prove it though.  If the devs would upgrade the version of TinyMCE being used, then I think all would be resolved...

Are we allowed to discuss spammers now, because if we are i would like to ask a couple of questions. puzzled

1) why do they do it, are they bored with nothing better to do.

2) do they copy & paste, i presume they don't sit for hours writing EDITEDnse.

1) Because there are still enough stupid/naïve people for it to pay.

2) The text we see is probably 'translated' half a dozen times using something like Google translate. They usually read a bit like 1970s instruction manuals for Japanese VHS recorders. "Congratulations honoured man for the excellent selection to the means of transcribing your desired television experiences. Crucially man should observe all measures in this respect of safety to your bodily harm in case of shock hazard should occur most recently.... "

Advertising.

Spammers spam because it pays. A certain percentage of people will click on the link. A certain percentage of those who do will have an interest in the product being touted and a certain percentage of those people will buy something.

It might be 1 in 1000 or less, but people get paid peanuts for distributing 1000's of spam messages  to forums.

An otherwise resonably respectable site such as freelancer.com (which advertises quick jobs for people to bid on) usually has loads of such requests.

One reason not to completely trust reviews posted online, ratings for holiday destinations, etc. Often they are faked.

rolling on the floor laughing

I can't believe that anyone would buy a product or a service after watching a TV advert (because 99.9 percent of  adverts are unadultered ####) but they must do because the advertising industry is mahoovise!

It's the same with spam. No-one can understand why it works, but it does.
