How to speed up your metabolism?

I've been getting stomach pains for about the last 6 months and being sick a lot, and am now waiting to have some blood tests at the doctors.  In the meantime I thought I would try and get fitter and see if that helps with the pain.  Speeding up your metabolism seem to be a good route to take.  Any ideas or alternative suggestions?

I could only answer that if I were your GP.

I have had to wait two and a half weeks for the blood tests, and currently booked in next Thursday, then I will have to wait for the results.  Then if nothing shows up I will have to get another appointment and see what else it could be.  Seems to be taking forever!

Your metabolism will be affected by your lifestyle.

A black coffe in the morning followed by light exercise will kick start your metabolism first thing. Eating smaller but more regular meals also helps, so for example, plan your diet around several meals a day starting at 7am and thereafter every three hours or so. A balanced diet on a little and often basis works well. Avoid fad diets.

Your GP may prescribe some special dietry requirements.

Cheers guys.  I heard about the coffee thing too, so have switch from tea to coffee.  I have also started drinking unsweetened cappuccino, will that be okay too?  With skimmed milk.

I'm no Doctor but diet has a lot to do with speeding up your metabolism. Leave out fried out food or anything usually associated with oil or fat.

For instance if you like mashed potato just mash it with semi-skimmed milk and NO butter or marg. Grill meat and fish and roast or just blanch vegetables.

Try and avoid acidic foods and sauces.

Also think about the rate at which your food is burned off.  Sugary things cause an insulin spike and then a crash, making you feel the need to eat soon after snacking. Brown things (granary bread, brown rice etc) tend to burn slower leaving you feeling fuller longer, and avoiding the up and down blood sugar levels that cause cravings for rubbish and over eating.

Why do you want to increae your metabolism?

It seems to be far from clear that eating little and often increases metabolism. Weight trainign may, as having more muscle takes up more energy.

Most of the experts disagree or even don't have a clue, so few of us are likely to know much.

EDIT I'm also unsure what avoiding fatty foods would do for your metabolism.

I agree. I hate black coffee with no sugar, but in the context of its use, treat it as medicine. It will increase the bodys fat burning ability and give an energy performance boost when exercising on an empty stomach in the morning.

It's the yin and yang for your body. It balances out the natural sugars and fats. Also with stomach pains it could either be IBS or sensitivity. Eating less fat and acidic foods may reduce or eliminate the discomfort.

There is a clear corelation between what you eat and your metabolism. There is also a relationship between how much of your body mass is made up of  fat versus muscle.

A more muscular body with less fat for example, uses more energy than a body with a higher percentage of fat, but of the same total weight.

Fat is slow to break down by the body  for use, so is generally stored, unsuprisingly as fat. The body will prioritise the source of energy from food, when digesting, with carbohydrates being the best source of energy and then protein. The body will also canibalise itself and take energy from the muscles if the body energy stores fall too low and it will do so before using body fat, as the muscles have a more ready source of energy in the form of glycogen and also proteins.

Therefore, eating more fatty foods will increase the percentage of fat on the body and slow metabolism.

Why increase metabolism?

Increasing the bodys efficiency to utilise the nutrients in your diet decreases the tendancy for the body to store fat and eating little and often helps this process by preventing your body going into feast or famine mode.

Of course this needs work and those not blessed with a naturally high metabolism will need to work harder, but what better reward than a healthy and fit body?

Apologies if that all seems a bit evangelical, but some things in life require effort and our modern day westernised lifestyle does little to promote healthy living.

I have got a bit bigger in the last year.  Well 3 sizes to be precise!  Smile  I thought it might be a good idea to do some healthy things.  A couple of things have contributed to it be slower, and having stomach pains I thought I would try something different.

RE: How to speed up your metabolism?

These are the things I have been doing different:

Leaving the skin on the cucumber

Drinking healthy bio yogurt drinks with breakfast and tea.

More coffee.

Changed takeaway food.

Putting lemon in my water.

That sounds really bad 3 sizes, I was quite slim in the first place and it is probably just a size or two in some clothes but yeah in leather jackets 3 sizes!
