How to make a million...
No, £1,000,000 is not that much. IIRC, you need (to win) just over £3m to be able to give up work and (reasonably expect to) live in relative comfort for the rest of your days - assuming you do this in your 20s-40s. Obviously, some bright spark in Government thinks that £1.4m is all you need when you retire - or that you just don't need to be that comfortable when your older...

1m and I'd give up work. Depends where and how you live.
I'd also have a nice car to go with that!
When I was in the UK I lived in a 4 bed detached with a drive. It cost £100,000 in 2000, I sold it for £230,000 in 2007 and came here. That was in Wigan though.
My local sold me my regular brew for £1.60.
Now my house is worth about the same, the area a pretty posh one and my brew costs me £6.50 or so!
10 minutes drive into the country I can have a 5 bed detached with an acre or so of land, a barn and a summer house for under £100,000 equiv!

But how to make a million...Come up with a great patent idea and sue Apple!

And anyone can do it - no special skills needed, no education, no cash outlay, no market speculation, (erm) no extra staff required to achieve - genius!
Or £4m if you're a hi-fi enthusiast.

I've got this scene from the Naked Gun playing in my head...

In general a million is not a lot these days - it won't buy you a house with off street parking in Clapham (I have a friend who is trying to buy one).
It will in Stockwell...
