It’s quite well known now that the BBC has the rights to formula 1 for the next few years and was curious to know if any one knows if they plan to broadcast using their BBC HD channel? They have so far used it for the odd footy game, when will they get serious with HD?

Re: Formula 1 on the BBC

There's an interview somewhere on the web (can't find it at the mo) with Bernie, and he says that part of the reason for going to the Beeb is so they can make "technological advancements" or words to that effect. Smile

I've read rumours on a few motorsport and AV sites, implying that FOM want to do a worldwide launch of HD coverage at some point, rather than starting it with countries who have the ability to show it now.

Some races, where the coverage is provided by the local broadcaster rather than "Bernievision", are seemingly shown in HD locally, but the"world" feed is still SD.

It seems to me that F1 is tailor-made for HD. Trouble is, the Beeb's strategy on HD seems a bit hit and miss at the moment. We get Antiques Roadshow in HD, for example, but not Dr Who. Go figure. Come on Auntie Beeb, get it together.

Clare - you just made my year! Just got to persuade the freeholders on my flat that satellite dishes are okay to attach to the building and I'm away... or is BBC HD on Virgin?!

We're in the process of interviewing all the main broadcasters - and some of the new online players - about what's coming up in the world of television.

There'll be a bumper feature in our Ultimate Guide to TV, out 5th June, which will also appear here online. We'll be previewing more snippets in the weeks ahead....

Ah but yeah but no but - I'm not clear whether BBC HD will become a simulcast of BBC1 (which has content which is both SD and HD), which it isn't at the moment - it's a conglomeration of all-HD content as far as I can tell. So even if you have access to BBC HD, it *may* not have Formula 1 on it - publicity material so far is unclear (unless I'm being thick).

Ah, yes, I see what you're saying. Hold tight for the moment basically until everything becomes more clear.

yes, I wouldn't be jumping ship into any HD telly source right now, personally.

Who cares about this HD malarkey, so long as they use "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac as the theme music!

#bom bom bom bom, boom bom bom bom bom bom, BOOM / diddy diddy diddy BOOM / diddy didddy#

Ahem , carry on

Re: Formula 1 on the BBC

isnt it up to the local TV station filming the GP if HD is availible or not..............so it would be a BBC decision in the case of the GP staged here?

Re: Formula 1 on the BBC

There's actually only a few races where the local broadcaster host things (IIRC) The majority of the time it's FOM.
