Elvis is Rubbish

Why PJ? Just out of curiosity...
I agree with the pro. But that's my personal taste. Think of the songs that Elvis made and then think of what Paul Weller has done since the 70s. Absolutely no comparison in my eyes. From leaving the Jam when they were huge and going all soul and pastel jumpers with Style Council and then reinventing himself from the late 80s onwards as a solo artist. Fabulous. For me, he is up there with Paul McCartney (Joel, I am shocked!) as our greatest singer songwriter.
The Style Council - a career nadir if ever there was one. Just as well he took that walk up Stanley Road IMO. Other than that, a stellar artist who stuck to his roots and beliefs - a rare thing these days.
Style Council were EDITED though....!

You are having a laugh! Were you alive in the 80s?

I was probably one of Paul Wellers biggest fans. But I have to agree, partly, with record spot in as far as Weller's stuff with the Style Council didn't inspire like the Jam songs. Weller IMO split the Jam too soon. They were probably good for another album or two.

This is still all subjective. I agree though. Loved The Jam, hated Style Council, loved some of Wellers early solo stuff, find him intensly boring nowadays.
Also keeping with Paul Weller, The Jam were the only band to have three singles to enter the charts @ number one. . .I think? Possibly Slade also? I'll have to check my facts. There has been 3 or 4 bands since (boy bands) to achieve that status.
Anyhow the Beatles nor Elvis achieved that in Britain

Whereas now anybody could do it, since you only have to sell about four copies.

I have a musical taste totally at odds with rock n roll. I can't abide any of it. Eddie Cochrane or whoever, it's just not funky, interesting, musical, involving or in fact anything. It's just noise
Accepting that you can trace all of our current music back to rock and roll and way before, I think there's a fair degree of truth that rock and roll provided a BIG convergence point where many styles which had come before "met" and likewise as many took off from there.
Joel, must admit having read the above I'm half-hoping your musical tastes include the likes of the mighty Bolthrower or Cannibal Corpse......
Who?

With The Jam, he was an angry young man with a lot to say. He got bored and discovered soul. You only have to listen to the last four Jam songs to realise that - Beat Surrender could have been Style Council. They split at the right time as they were all going in different directions. The Style Council is perfect barbecue music! The Jam are my favourites, without question (Down In The Tube Station being one of my all time favourite tunes) but I still liked Style Council and throughout his solo career he has made some brilliant music.

I think most artist were angry during the late 70's, Gerrard, the knock-on effect of Punk? Without doubt, Weller was dissillusioned with the sort of following around the "white soul" clubs and the venues were, in his words, "too f*****g big, somehow the Jam's impact has diminished."
I'll grant you the Style Council were perfect BBQ music - use the CDs for coasters and burn the LP sleeve in the charcoal...boom boom!
Sorry, but being an angry young man is one thing, being an angry young man with a floppy mop top haircut and a bad line in fashion statements is just unacceptable.
I did see them once though; Edinburgh Playhouse on Labour's "Red Wedge" tour back in the mid-80s. Billy Bragg, the Style Council, etc...yeah, you guessed it; everybody wanted him to play some Jam material, instead he turns up wearing a cardigan. There's just no need for that; he got what he deserved that night (lukewarm is being kind....)!

There's no pleasing some people.![]()
OK, so we're a tough audience! ![]()
That's pretty much the only blip - the rest of his stuff I liked for the most part. Still, the would be a boring place if we all liked....etc, etc!!
I like a lot of Weller's stuff over the years - both he and fellow angry-young-man-of-the-late 1970s Elvis Costello have continued to reinvent themselves musically. Both superb lyricists, too....
But yes, each to his own - which is why branding anything (possibly with the exception, as JD, mentions, of Scooch) as 'rubbish' is risky ![]()

Your POV on Artists like Elvis,S+G and say The Beatles is down to Your personal Music taste at the end of the day, but all I can say is that there is none of their Music either in MY Vinyl or CD collection.
My love with Music started when I first heard early Electro Hip-Hop on late night Capital radio (what ever happened to Mike Allen?
) with People like Africa Bambata, Grandmaster Flash and B.D.P. These People were My music inspiration not Elvis etc.
