E class or 5 series?

Basically, it's down to these 2 (had to ruefully exclude the Jaguar XF as well, as I'm not "old enough" for it, so they say!). I'm getting them for a similar price (12/62 plate). Comfort is of prime importance. My OH doesn't like the image BMW drivers carry.

So then, E220 CDI or 520D?

Would you consider Lexus?

Lexus GS is in the same class but there are no diesel models.

Preference for comfort suggests Merc to me.

Do you take pleasure in driving? If yes, then the BMW!

How many years you will keep the car? If more then 5, then the Mercedes, as they get better value in second hand market!

Sorry, didn't know that.

Is Audi out of the running.........great diesel engines.

A business colleague I used to deal with, said that the build quality of Mercs had dropped.........that was a few years ago, so don't know if it still applies.

The Merc wins on confort.

The BMW has a sharper chassis, providing a great driving experience, if you are the "sporty" kind...

I'm going to test drive both and see which is better. Yes, I've heard that the BMW is better driving while the Merc is more comfortable. With work being 60 miles away, what would I prefer?  puzzled

I have no doubts about Merc's reliability, having owned a C class for almost 5 years and 80000 miles.

I love Jaguar. It'll probably be the future replacement of E class / 5 series after 4-5 years.

The Merc construction Quality can drop what ever they want, they always will be better built then Audi! Merc can out perform Audi in every field!

Audi A6 is sadly out of contention, as my OH finds the design "boring".  ohhh sure

Well actually, there are some really nice Audi A6s for a cheaper price as compared to BMW or a Merc. I think it at least deserves a test drive! Any comments on the A6?

I'll be 40 in 5 years' time. I completely agree that Jaguar XF is the most good looking car. Tried my best to get it past my OH, but no luck!  Crying

Is Audi A6 a front wheel drive car? How can it be fun to drive then?

Pssh.  Next you'll be telling me that passive crossovers can't be fun to listen to...

BTW if you're considering the A6 (which I like a lot), you might find a very nicely specced Passat (which I like even more) for the same price.
