Does Apple keep you poor?
A YouGov poll has revealed that 1 in 5 IPhone owners are always overdrawn at the bank while 54% of Android owners are never overdrawn, and 50 % of Blackberry users are also never overdrawn.
10% of Blackberry owners earned more than £50000 per year while only 5% of Iphone users are in this salary bracket.
Just under half of IPhone users earn less than £20000 per year compared with just 27% of Android users.
Interesting!
Could it be that the higher earners are more savvy in their buying habits and are not prepared to fork out for Apples vastly price inflated gadgets?
Could it be that lower earners are more interested in "keeping up with the Jones's"
What do you guys think?
The reason that iphone users are generally skint is because they change or upgrade every few months. The bro-in-law has changed his 4 times in the last 18 months. Pleased I have a cheapo Nokia.
I have a cheapo Sony Ericsson. Does all that I want.
I agree that Apple users are always upgrading, just look at the queues for the IPad2. Most of the punters already had the IPad 1.
In my experience, most people think that they're entitled to a "free upgrade" every 18/24 months. In reality, you're just buying a new device over the duration of the contract. And an iPhone contract works out at about £800 over two years. Perhaps the higher debt level is just to service the iPhone debt!
rather pointless stats.
they don't really relate.
all you can take is iPhone owners are overdrawn less than the other owners.
Apple (with help from Canon and Adobe) keeps me getting paid, since their gear helps me work, backup my data and generally not fear disaster.
a shocking amount of students that i know are on £35+ a month i phone contracts.... which is silly as they cant afford to pay their other bills! art students generally have an i mac, a mac book, an i phone and now an i pad..... it's all about image baby

Surely this just indicates the differing requirements and therefore buying habits of a different generation of people. Very few younger people are going to be earning £50,000 or more. Without wanting to stereotype (though blatantly I am going to) people from the older generation are less likely to want an iPhone - they just want a phone, they don't need the complications of having to sync it with their PC to get it working. Those who do want a smart phone are most likely to want it for email and a phone - they either don't want or don't need the extras an iPhone gives such as access to games and social networking. A Blackberry makes perfect sense for them.
On the other hand, those earning £20,000 or less are more likely to be from the younger generation - clearly the iPhone is attractive to younger people because it gives them access to games, social networking and music. Things the Blackberry is not particularly good at.
Apple doesn't keep anyone poor. Nor does Microsoft, O2, Benson and Hedges, or Stella Artois. It is their own lack of self-restraint. I have bought an Apple Macbook five years ago, updated some software, but over that time spent considerably less than Windows-using friends with their constant upgrades and servicing costs, not to mention virus removal and downtime. However, I have never seen the need to have an iPhone. I have an iPod touch and a cheap PAYG Nokia and 20-somethings think I am terminally uncool. I may one day buy an iPad, when it has 256 GB or more of storage, a retina display, 24 hour battery life and a 10mp camera. Someone has to pay for that product development. It will be them not me.
Agreed, but is it not Apples hype that encourages their lack of self restraint?
I heard that Apple are also responsible for global warming and are the cause of the troubles in Ivory Coast and Libya. Stupid thread.
Buying an Imac 3 years ago has actually saved me money - no need to buy costly windows upgrades and then have to pay to get new versions of the software I already own to make it work with the new version of windows. No need to buy a virus scanner etc or spend money upgrading my hardware just to get my machine to run the latest windows bloatware.
If people get into debt because they cant control what they buy then more fool them.
Dont think that Apple advertise more than any other company - watching TV with my son this morning every commercial break had an ad for Xbox, Samsung, Nintendo etc
What's this? A commercial outfit, attempting to generate more sales through marketing? An outrage I tells you! Won't someone think of the children?!
So when Apple advertise they generate hype leaving us with no option then to sell our offspring in order to own their products but when other companies advertise its classed as marketing?
Well it doesn't keep me poor, but it makes me spend money (or, rather, I choose to spend money on their products). But, then, you can get good value out of them. I just bought a new MacBook Pro yesterday. My old MacBook met its end on my living room floor...but it was over four years old and still worked OK. That's not bad at all for a computer, I think. I'd considered it worth its money after three years, so one more was a bonus.
Not sure about the phones. They seem very expensive. Cool though.

Pretty meaningless stats.
How many non-IPhone-owners are always overdrawn? Not stated...
How many iPhone owners are never overdrawn? Also not stated.
How many of those 10% blackberry owners earning over 50k were handed theirs by a corporate IT department? Also not stated, but an area where Blackberry are still holding on...
Twice as many earning under £20k still prefer the often more expensive iPhone over Android. Actually that is interesting. It does demonstrate that being cheaper doesn't outweigh quality, even amongst those who you would infer are the most budget-conscious. Also agree that this group will include a lot of younger people, who are often still living at home, etc, and bizarrely often seem to have more disposable income than those of us earning more, but with mortgages and kids of our own!
