Disney buying Lucasfilm and Star Wars franchise

"STAR WARS: EPISODE 7 feature film targeted for release in 2015."

I don't blame George Lucas. He's finally realised that he's never had an original idea for a film in his life, only made one half decent film, and that he's one of the luckiest men alive, so why not sell to Disney, they can't do any worse.

I believe Episode 7 filming has begun already...

Sad day...i loved the original trilogy but the latest movies just showed how far Lucas had fallen, awful stories, embarrasing scripts and dialogue and terrible performances from a genuinely great cast (minus Hayden Christiansen of course).

There is one upside to this news as perhaps we won't see Lucas go back and change the movies again as an excuse to milk the cash cow again at the cinema and inevitable BD and DVD release, i hope.

The news of 7, 8 and 9 comes as no surprise as Lucas wrote the over riding story and their arcs originally as 9 chapters with rumours persisting for years that the last three stories would be fleshed out and made as movies but after the poor efforts with 1, 2 and 3 i'm happy to hear someone else will be given a shot at it, after all they can't do any worse than those most recent movies....can they??

This is exactly why it's good news, Disney also own Pixar, can you imagine Star Wars if it was handled by the teams that made The Incredibles (great design and action sequences) or Toy Story 3 and Up (genuine emotional depth)?

As for animation Disney could make a bucket load out of this but Disney haven't been very good at making propper films, yes they have made lots of good fun films but to take something as epic as Star Wars and carry on, its going to be hard work and i hope they don't rush.

It also depends how Disney carry on with the storys, there are Star Wars books that carry on the saga and just to let you know the Emperor is still alive and well 

Disney wouldn't be making the films. Disney own Pixar, Pixar make the films, Disney own Marvel, Marvel make the films, Disney own Lucasfilm...

You know damn well sooner or later George would have attempted it himself, now it's going to happen but without George around to balls it up.

The only problem I see is that Episodes 1-6 are Anakin's story, it's his journey from innocence (albeit bloody irritating innocence), through the darkness and back to redemption. He's dead now, so what are the next three films supposed to concentrate on? Hammill, Fisher and Ford are at a decent age to take the story on 30 years later, that might be interesting to see...

I see what you're saying but Empire Strikes Back is a decent enough film by any measure, imo.

I belive this is the best thing to happen to Star Wars since the first movie.  The franchise is definitely in good hands.  THough just to throw the cat in amongst the pidgeons...

Does anyone think the "new movies" will be remakes of the original trilogy!!!?  >)

To the post about there being 9 movies - this is something George Lucas later denied on film.  He liked the idea of 9 movies, but never had fleshed out any story line beyond the original trilogy.  As someone else also pointed out - there are the books, which do go over the story line of the New Republic and the Skywalker / Solo dynasty, and the growth of the new Jedi.  I can't see the films doing down that route.  They'll likely be either very early set movies (even longer ago) when it was the days of the Old Republic, and when the Sith were vast in numbers, or set in a future Star Wars timeline.

There's also still talk about the live action TV series, perhaps the first of the new movies will launch that?
