Diamondbrite / Supaguard - Good idea or just a con?

I recently placed an order for a car (as new condition, with 5700 miles on the clock). The salesman offered diamondbrite protection to my car for £269 Shock

He claimed that they offer this at no extra profit to them!! (yeah right, & you would waste 15 minutes of your time showing a video & explaining it's benefits!!)

I've seen the same stuff available on EBay for £10-15. Not sure if they're genuine, although they claim to be.

Are these worth putting on?

This is like extended warranties, a good way to make a large extra profit when the customer is vulnerable. Look at this http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/products/products/218883/jewelultra_diamondbrite_protective_glaze_sealant.html  or this http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/10974-diamondbrite-have-i-been-ripped-off/ and don't waste your money.

I had it once and it makes no notiecable difference. If you want your car to stay shiny and clean... clean it

Yeah....I thought it wasn't worth the price too. Thanks for confirming my suspicion!

I used to work for a main dealer and we were heavily incentivised to sell Supaguard, along with Tyre Insurance and GAP.  Of those 3, GAP insurance is the only additional product I would pay for myself, especially if buying something very expensive on finance.

The best thing to do with the body work is to use a good quality car shampoo regularly and then something like the Meguiar's 3-stage crystal cleaning products every few months.  My car is black metallic and this combination keeps it looking great.

BB,

I had the Diamon bright option put on my Mercedes which I purchased new, I thought at the time it was a waste but did it any way.

You have to put a replenisher on ideally once a month, but this is no big deal.

All I can say is it was worth it, the car shines like it did the day I got it and the dirt just drops off.

I use their products for cleaning the car and by them 5 litres at a time.

Thanks michael hoy! I've put GardX on my Merc E class, simply because the salesman offered it for free (down from £370), presumably so that he can make up numbers to achieve his sales target end of May!

Have you got leather interiors? Does it help? Mine is a light grey (no. 092 on seat surgeons website). Just a bit nervous about the impending new arrival in the family!

When cleaning your new merc bigboss avoid carwashes and don't use a sponge,it holds grit and will scratch the paintwork.A sheepskin mitt is brilliant and only a few quid.I spray foam mine with a jetwash, then wash with the mitt, but after every pass rinse mitt in a clean bucket of water.I searched a few car detailing sites out and this is what they recommend...Iv'e got a 58 plate focus but getting in the habbit of car care for when i get my car Smile

Use auto glym twice a year. Rain water forms into droplets and just slides off the car! My car still nice and shiny and looking brand new, despite being five years old now.Brilliant stuff, and only fifteen quid, bottle lasts two years!

Cheers

I agree with those who say that all those extras offered at point of sale are lucrative money spinners.

Put the products on yourself for a fraction of the cost.

Hi BB when I bought my Auris last year we were offered it for 300 odd quid when I said no thanks he said well you can have it for nothing and I think after having it I might be tempted to pay for it on the Jag maybe not £300 though as if it gets a little dirty  it washes itself  when it rains  rolling on the floor laughing

Agree with above - get a mitt for washing your car.  Dry with a blade and then quality chamois.

My brother has a collection of rather nice cars, and he uses lots of Meguiars products for cleaning, so they must be reasonable quality (although anyone buying "car shampoo" needs their head examining!).

Hi BB,

Mine is black leather interior, with the light coloured roof lining (not sure of colour).

I use all the Diamond Brite products bought direct from Diamond Bright 5 litres at a time.

Bird droppings, tree sap and road tar just wash away with ease, I will be changing mine maybe March 2014 (waiting for some new models to come out.

I will have had this car 9 years next year and it still looks like new.

All the best with your new purchase.

Does any of this stuff stop dozy nightshift mechanics running red lights and T-boning your pride and joy?

Might invest in a bottle for my next car if it does.  The little Saturn Sky (Opel GT in the UK?) is in the big car park in the skycrying
