copied blu-ray films
Hi folks,
i'm hoping that someone can settle an argumant i'm having with a friend.
he regular gets copied bd films, although i'm not interested in them becouse i believe they are inferior in both pq and sq,he wont have it.
could someone, with prefrably big words, please point out what is lost in the copying proccess,if any?
once again this is not something i wish to purchase, not just becouse it is illegal but becouse of the jobs this black market industrey costs.
cheers
graham
his copies are usualy pretty good...hd audio shows up on avr,pq looks ok...but there must be something lost in the copying proccess?
Detail retireval should be around 20-30mbps if not more for a normal blu-ray.
If its a copy I would suspect some form of data loss through transmission, even data being compressed.
I don't think a copy would even support dolby true hd or dts hd.
This case is similar to mine. My friend downloads Blu-ray rips which around 1/5th in size of the actual blu-ray file. Obviously data has been compressed or lost. But the thing is to most people it's good enough (especially since he's not paying).
A good real world test would be to get the original & a copy. Plug & play, during playback press select with both copies of the same film to see if it recognises dolby true hd.
but it all depends on the way your friend copies it. I'm sure if it's professionally done, it should be the same, but I would have my doubts.

Have u not answered yr own question? With good equipment copies may well be excellent, after all, genuine bd's are themselves copies. You also hint at your disaproval which is sufficient to refuse them. I suspect large scale pirates are oftwn poor quality and those of unreleased films are probably rubbish. Never needing to refuse a pirate but I would simply say no. I think the issue is not only of cheating studios out of money but more importantly the links to organised crime.
iv'e done a side to side comparason and unfortunatley i can't find any differance, avr displaying hd master aswell.they are proffesionaly done.
he can't understand why anyone would buy new bd's when these copies, are so cheap.
i'm just looking for a point of rule to show that there not as good as he thinks...i'm struggling

If he's buying them, it's worth remembering that these operations can often be funding people who commit far more serious crimes. Whether or not the quality has suffered shouldn't really be of concern when he considers this.
i saw a tv programe months ago detailing the fact that a house used for copying(about 6 machines)can turn over £30000 a month!!
when i was refurbing in leeds,a chinese lady came round the sites daily selling disks...the industry is massive.

what do u mean by copied ?
If they are ripped they should be exactly the same quality.
its not me :rofl:jees i am defanatly not tech minded.
my friend gets like a master disk containing music and films to use as he likes for friends/family whatever.
he can't understand why i just bought the new avatar release when he could get me a copy for, well nothing.
was hoping to prove they were of inferiar quality, but finding it hard.
the copied disks are from illegaly sort material....usualy before the bd is actualy released

"Over the three years hundreds of Chinese people worked for them. They don't speak English, they live in poor communities, and they are extremely vulnerable," Steeples said. "The year before last there were three murders of DVD sellers. These are the invisible people, they pay around £20,000 to be brought over here, they are in debt bondage, they get abused, they get kidnapped off the street and they live in slave-like conditions."

Don't think you mean Shylock.
Quality wise unless they are "pirates" just shot in the cinema on a video camera can be just the same , a colleague of mine some years ago used to get them and they were missing things like subtitles and other languages but otherwise looked perfect , but as prevoiusly stated the issue is they are illegal and the production/distribution network underneath can be quite shocking.
To answer the question directly without getting bogged down by the morality and legality, no, there's absolutely no reason why illegal copies will inherrently be worse quality than an original film. That doesn't mean they won't be inferior, they could be over-compressed or even upscaled from a DVD. So in that respect your 'friend of dubious legal and moral standing' is quite correct.

I can't comment on your friends copies but the few I've seen had sound issues (stereo only or lip-sync problems to a disturbing degree) and and an inferior picture (compression artifacts).
I've sent them back to the seller and always got a refund as I did not intend to buy copies.
