Help - my car is possessed! Any experts here?

I had to drive through some floods yesterday so I guess water's got in the electrics. With the key out of the ignition the wipers keep coming on as do the lights and indicators...

I had to unplug the battery. It seems fine when running though.

What should I do? leave it to dry out? take it to a garage?

It's a 2004 Focus

Thanks

I'm no expert but if it's running it should be ok, the wiring was soaked so yes needs to dry out,as do your brakes.I would take it on a steady run,any problems then pay for a garage to take a look Smile

RE: Car electrical problems

If your focus is the 2004 onwards model your problem could be water or condensation in the engine bay fuse box  .

Check that the fuse box cover is fitted properly because sometimes the plastic cover lifts and lets in water .

If you take the cover off and you see signs of water ingress you can leave the top off in a dry garage to let it evaporate or speed thing up with the very careful use of a hair dryer until the problem goes away but if there is any sign of burning or excessive corrosion the the fuse box will have to be replaced .

If in doubt take it to your local garage to do the job .

Hope this helps .

Spray everything with wd40. Displacing water is one of its many useful Characteristics. It is very good with electrics

WD 40 is indeed magic.

Thanks for the advice - I've aired the car with the bonnet up and I've sprayed the fuse box with WD40 and will do so again tonight. The central looking still seems a bit iffy but generally it's calmed down.

I'd connect a code scanner and see if the car's onboard computer is reporting any faults. You can get one with reasonable specs from Amazon for around £18:

Interesting - don't think I'd know where to plug it in though!

According to this thread:

http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=142275

Its under a panel blow the steering wheel column - labelled ODB. Its located around there on most cars I've come across. It sounds like you benefit from a Haynes manual as well Smile

I would strongly recommend getting a ODB-II scanner - I've known people save alot of money and its generally a good thing to own.

Good luck!
