best hi def (HD or bluray) that shows what hi def can do....
just wondered all you lot that have full HD via HD or bluray, whats the best disc/film that you have seen that really shows off the 'full HD'ness of the new formats.....am hoping its a sci fi film
hey hey i knew it would be sci fi....!
have they done 2001 on HD and/or bluray? bet that could be stonking!
Yes, 2001 just out as part of a range of Stanley Kubrick Blu-ray releases. I haven't watched it yet, but The Shining was great.
As far as modern sci-fi goes, Sunshine is an awesome Blu-ray disc - looks great, and sounds absolutely stonking.
excellent! i can see me spending a fortune updating certain items in the dvd collection, i did hear somewhere that starship troopers was v good on blu ray...
i did hear somewhere that starship troopers was v good on blu ray...
Bit grainy (and the high-def shows up the rather basic special effects)
but sounds amazing - and, as ever, wildly bonkers Paul Verhoeven fun.
interesting...
i remember when dvd was taking off Fight Club was 'the one' to have as it showed off what dvd could do as well as having all the extras etc does anyone remember this or is it just me!
also i know games console manufactures are always looking for the 'killer' game that makes it stand out, so it seems to me this has yet to come for hi def discs....
wonder if lucas will re do all 6 star wars films...if so ihe better keep han shooting first!! ha ha
Back in the old days of VHS and Betamax, Betamax was the better quality however VHS ended up being the prefered format. Is HD DVD any better than Blu-ray or does it depend on certain films?
We've not seen any difference, picture-quality wise, between the
two formats. With its larger (potential) capacity, we've heard better
soundtracks on Blu-ray where an uncompressed PCM mix is offered
alongside the new HD formats (excellent though they are).
And
that's the point - the best HD discs are a major step up from DVD,
regardless of format. The original print/master mix quality and
transfer methods used (ie, how much effort/remastering etc that's gone
into the disc production) makes far more difference re the eventual
picture and sound-quality than the HD format it's carried on.
I think Casino Royale
remains one of the best Blu-ray discs so far - for sound and vision -
as Sony was determined it was going to be a showcase for the BD format.
Am keeping fingers crossed that they put as much effort into
remastering the rest of the Bond back-catalogue.
Oh and don't
hold your breath for Lucas/Spielberg Blu-rays - they've both got
clauses in their contracts to say they and they alone oversee any
releases of their films in any home ent. format.
With the new Indiana Jones
out in May there might possibly be that plus the other Indy films out
on Blu-ray for Christmas, but I doubt that's left Lucas enough time to
be involved in Star Wars BD developments. Here's hoping i'm proven wrong...
Thank you Clare, is there anything you dont know!! ha ha
I have a Toshiba EP30 and will stick with it for a while and let the Blu Ray palyers sort themselves out as regards profile this and that....as well as increase in choice and hopefully a decrease in price
I will not buy many HD DVDs (well i say that now but have just ordered some!) and use it as an upscaler, have just got the Panny TH37PX80, i am loving every minute of the TV and player
As regards sound i am planning the next steps so the extra space on a blu ray disc for sound isnt missed at the moment.
typical spielberg/lucas...whren lucas does get round to a HD transfer i hope he keeps Han shooting first and only does it once and not about 5 times like he did with the original trilogy when they came out of DVD
No news from New Line either on the HD versions of the LOTR triolgy, now there are 3 movies just crying out to be seen in a true 1080p picture as they look great on DVD so imagine just how good NZ I mean Middle Earth will look! Think we all have a long wait tho....![]()
Middle Earth will indeed look great. Not so a lot of the CGI, which rumour has it is being/will need to be redone for an HD release. With Peter Jackson so busy (The Lovely Bones; Halo; The Hobbit; Tintin), I wouldn't hold your breath for LOTR Blu-rays anytime soon, either.
I think the fact that New Line are still yet to pay the Tolken estate money oweing from the LOTR movies may also have something to do with it.![]()
Talking of HD showing up slightly dodgy CGI, some of the CGI in Spider-Man leaves a little to be desired like when Peter Parker first decides to climb up a wall and go jumping accross the rooftops.![]()

there were only 3 there were only 3 there were only 3 there were only 3
lets face the original trilogy cannot be beaten
revenge of the sith, ok had some good sfx but the dialogue was dire and hayden christensen doesn't live upto the part.
would i buy the o trilogy depends if lucas ruins return of the jedi again [gutted about the rmasterd dvd] where he changes the ending from showing the ghost of legend david praise aka darth to a ghost of hc. has this ruined it for anyone else iknow my bro was v dspointd too.
Deja-vu on blu-ray and The Kingdom on HDDVD look great to me,good films too.Oh,and Deja-vu sounds as good as it looks too.

That looked dodgy on the DVD let alone the Blu-Ray. I've just watched No Country For Old Men on Blu-Ray. Ok, it's not the kind of film you'd think was demo material but it really is a beautiful transfer, down to every craggy detail on Tommy Lee Jones face. I'm glad Disney have embraced the format wholeheartedly (NCFOM is from Miramax who are/were owned by Disney). They've done a top job so far with HD transfers. I'd also go with Andy's suggestion of Blade Runner - a stunning transfer of one of my favourite movies. Those opening shots blew me away all over again.

Blade Runner. It's available on HD DVD and Blu-ray. Eye-popping! And you get Dolby True HD sound.
