Best 3D Movies on Blu Ray?
Getting a 3D blu ray player for Xmas what are the best 3D live action movies to get on blu ray for watching over Xmas? Not bothered about cartoons or documentaries. I'm guessing Avatar is the obvious one but what else is worth getting?
It depends on your priorities. Are you looking for the best 3D technical presentation, or films that stand on their own merits irrespective of the 3D? In my view, there's a genuine dearth of the latter. The great majority of 3D movies are fist-bitingly awful as films (Avatar certainly included).
I think that's a great problem with 3D at the moment. Even as the catalogue of 3D Blu-rays grows, the number of genuinely worthwhile films remains alarmingly low. Choice is even slimmer if you discount animation. Coraline and several Pixar titles are worthwhile additions to the 3D Blu-ray catalogue, but I'm struggling to think of much else.
If it's live action only, Hugo is probably worth a go, if a bit twee for my tastes. I wasn't a fan of Prometheus, either, though I don't want to reignite that debate. That said, according to most accounts the 3D presentation is excellent (I was certainly impressed at the cinema).
Maybe The Hobbit will be the first genuinely excellent film to make effective use of 3D, but of course the Blu-ray of the first instalment is a long way of, with the film only hitting cinemas this Christmas.
If you're just looking for a 3D showpiece, you might try The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti 3D. A few other IMAX 3D titles are worth a glance, but be careful as there are many less than great IMAX 3D movies as well.
You could have a look here http://www.blu-ray.com/ as there's a comprehensive listing of 3D Blu-rays with detailed technical reviews. It might help you narrow things down further.
Hugo, tron legacy and cave of forgotten dreams are about the only worthwhile 3d films. I've not really seen any of the animated ones strapped mentions tho.
Thanks for the quick reply, not really that bothered about how good the film is, I've watched some terrible movies in my time as I love 70's and 80's splatter movies and have sat through hundreds of at best, mediocre films and plenty more that if you gave them a star rating out of 10 then 1 would be generous and that was just to see a few minutes of good gory effects! Im just after the best possible 3D experience at home. Can just be a great sense of depth or it can be stuff floating around in your face. Honestly recommend any old rubbish as long as the 3D is good.
I saw Ice Age 4 at the cinema recently with my nieces. My first time seeing 3D at the cinema, there was not that much 3D effects. It was okay, the movie was pants though.

I'm always interested in anything Herzog does. I haven't seen Cave of Forgotten Dreams in 3D, though apparently the cave interiors look stunning. I'll likely add this to my Blu-ray collection when I finally make the leap into the third dimension!
Having recommended an IMAX 3D documentary, however, I noted that the OP isn't interested in documentaries at all. If he can cope with stop-motion animation, I'd certainly push Coraline toward the top of the list. I enjoyed the film in its own right and I've watched the 3D Blu-ray, which clearly distinguishes the film's two story worlds in terms of image depth and vibrancy. The film just works better in 3D. The Blu-ray is only £4.25 if bought from an unnamed tax-dodger, so it's got be worth a punt on that basis alone!
EDIT: If you're interested, be careful to buy the true 3D Blu-ray, and not the version bundled with anaglyph glasses.
Apart from Hugo & Avatar, I thought Dredd 3D was the best implementation of 3D I ever saw.

I blame the Government if they were able to do it in a very legal way.

I always blame the Government.
Corporate ethics aside, Coraline is arguably the best value 3D Blu-ray available right now, though Hugo isn't too expensive either.
I ordered Hugo as was only £8 thanks, also had Coraline but paid £6 for that. Has anyone seen Avengers Assemble in 3D at home? The film gets 8.4 on imdb but I'm guessing that has nothing to do with the home 3D experience. May ask for Tron Legacy for Xmas as its not cheap! Any others I should consider?
Honestly, have a look at Blu-ray.com.
Whenever they review a 3D Blu-ray, they issue separate scores for the 2D and 3D discs. The user reviews are also worth reading. You'll get a very good sense of which films work in 3D and which don't. Marvel's Avengers received a score of 4 out of 5 for the 3D version; it's a solid 3D presentation, if not the very best.
On Amazon they have Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, Monster House and Open Season on 3D for £19! That can't be bad! 3 3d movies for under £20!
has anyone seen the new underworld in 3d?
i was hapily suprised,no gimicky stuff poking out of the screen, just plenty of depth....it's going for about£7 at the mo
Picked this up for £14.50 from Zavvi, less than £5 a film looking forward to seeing them in 3D!

Just had a look through them and the only thing that stuck out was the price! Man they are expensive! Yep, heard Avatar is very good.
