recently had a ceiling patched - sanded down and painted and looked great - anyway last night as dusk fell and shadows started the joint stands out a mile - anyway for me to hide this or is it a case of sanding right back or getting the whole ceiling skimmed?

Re: Any plasterers on here - advice needed

We cut a hole in our lounge ceiling a few months ago when I had to solder a CH pipe I drilled through. We patched up and plastered and have exactly the same issue. I've given up trying to sand it down to perfection but I think the answer is two-fold: 1) when it was plastered it should have been down with very wet and thin plaster and built up in fine layers to give a smooth finish, 2) sanded afterwards. We didn't do number 1 and should have taken more care over it.

Bite the bullet and get it skimmed, otherwise it will drive you nuts, trust me.

Did you sand the joints by hand? Mechanical sanding method is needed to "flat" the area properly.

Sand down the area using a orbital sanding machine. Skim area with finishing plaster, wait for it to dry(24hrs) and sand it down again, apply 1 coat of paint. The first coat of paint will show any imperfections. Sand down some more if needed and paint final coats.

You could always put up 'textured' paint that will hide it
