I think AVG is the de facto standard, freeware-wise.

Hey, I use Avast AV on my windows and Linux machines... it does the job nicely and handles scanning of steams (web, p2p, mail) out of the box.

Hope that helps.

I think Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus Free 7.5 is the best free software you can get. However if your willing to pay a small amount,
I use Steganos antivirus, it out performed the big name virus software in the PC Pro tests (Mcafee, Norton etc). Only £20 and is by far the best I've used.

As a web designer I use my PC's alot, it doesn't slow any programs down and I've had no viruses since switching to it nearly 2 years ago.

Link to Steganos

I think the current free AVG (ver. Cool is even better than the previous 7.5. The free AVG anti-spyware is also worth getting.

Your probably right - 7.5 is the last one I tried, I'm sure ver. 8 will have improvements. I'd still recomend the cheap Steganos software though.

Re: anti virus software

if you get avg 8.0, even the free one comes with antispyware, so you dont need avg's separate antispyware. just peace of mind, i still have a couple of other spyware progs tho.

Re: anti virus software

Bought a used PC from work for my boy, set up wireless internet for him, hadn't got round to putting anti-virus software on it, then he opened an MSN bob's your uncle, infested.
Tried the AVG but was so slow I went and bought Norton, Got rid of the Viruses but this tracking cookie will not go away, it finds it and suppossed to be clear then the next scan finds it again.
I so hate computers.
Interested how the mac is virus free?

Re: anti virus software

Well, technically, it's not virus free any more, there are a few Mac viruses in the wild. However, because there are only a small number of Mac's out there, people don't bother writing viruses for them as you get a lot more impact with a PC virus. Also, due to the way Mac's operate, it's intrinsically harder to make an effective virus (though Windows is gradually getting better at this with Vista).
