Albums of the year?
Here's mine, in no set order because that would take at least a week of intense debate...
The Cardinals - Cardinology
Kings of Leon - Only By The Night
Ida Maria - Fortress Round My Heart
Glasvegas - Glasvegas
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Last Shadow Puppets
Drive By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Black Kids - Partie Traumatic
The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing
Mystery Jets - Twenty One
Okkervil River - The Stand Ins
Joan as Police Woman - To Survive
Headhunter - Nomad
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Declaime - Astormsacomin'
and all the 23 Skidoo reissues.
Hm. I'm not sure how many albums from this year I've bought this year. Snow Patrol's latest. AC/DC's latest. Peter Bradley Adams' Leavetaking. That could be it.
AC/DC will struggle to get in the top three though.
This should be easy, as these are pretty much the only titles I have bought this year.
Favourite Albums ---
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago (CD)
Eleh - Floating Frequencies/ Intuitive Synthesis III (LP)
Eleh / Pauline Oliveros - The Beauty Of The Steel Skeleton / Drifting Depths (LP)
Hiromi - Beyond Standard (CD)
Hototogisu - Under The Rose (LP)
Portishead - Third (CD)
Mitsuhiro Yoshimura / Taku Sugimoto - not BGM and so on (CD)
Nadja - Radiance of Shadows (CD)
Toshimaru Nakamura - Dance Music (CD)
Wovenhand - Ten Stones (CD)
Favourite Single ---
Puffy - My Story
Guilty Pleasure ---
Aya Hirano - Riot Girl
A couple may have been released at the tale end of last year, but they are all this year's purchases.
I've not bought that many albums this year but off the top of head....
Story Of The Year - The Black Swan
Minus - The Great Northern Whale Kill
The Gaslight Anthem - That 59 Sound
Oh yeah.........And.........

What sort of music are the albums you put in your posts? I have never heard of them but am intrigued. Is it very heavy 'old-skool' metal stuff, or ... Just interested.
Thanks

Meshuggah is the heaviest listed here (although Gojira isn't far behind). It's extremely heavy, some fast bits, no blast beats or anything though. I'm a big fan of drummer Tomas Haake, he's a 'polyrythmic' drummer (The whole album is actually 4/4 timing, but you'd never guess it from what he's playing!)....Stand out track 'Combustion' ..... Their best album 'Nothing'.
Gojira is also very heavy, but does have more melody than Meshuggah. lots of fast double kicking, but again it's not blast-beat hyper-thrash metal. (I'm not really a fan of hyper-fast metal)....Stand out track 'The first one off the album' (Sorry. can't remember what it's called!) .... Their best album 'From Mars To Sirius'.
Cynic is an odd one, It's very proggy, quite heavy but lots of melody too, not much growly vocs, (Actually, I think the guy uses a vocoder) I would say it's more 'jazzy' than anything else here. ...Standout track 'King Of Those Who Know'. ....Their best album 'Focus'
Opeth is my personal fave band, even though 'Watershed' as good as it is, isn't their finest work IMO. Lots of heavy guitars, interspersed with extended passages of acoustic parts. Again, it's very proggy (technical/prog metal is my thing, in case you hadn't realised!). The guy has a great voice, singing and growling styles both excellent ....Stand out track 'Porcelain Heart'. ....Their best album 'Blackwater Park' (A masterpiece IMO)
TBH, my descriptions are probably more confusing than anything else. I'd recommend you check out their respective sites on Myspace.
My album of the year:

Been there, done that! My mate was round my house a few weeks ago and I played it sooo loud that the pressure from the bass ports was enough to open my door all the time! Absolutly awsome album!

Chris - I bought Watershed and Blackwater Park on your recommendation. I love Watreshed but can't get into Blackwater Park. Maybe perseverance will pay off but I've listened to it a lot and, at the moment, don't rate the playing, songwriting or production to be as good as Watershed. Hopefully time will tell.
I agree 100% about the production. But IMO the musicianship on 'B.P' (especially the drumming) is better than 'W'. It's just down to personal taste I guess. It took me longer to get into Watershed than any of the previous Opeth albums.
Blackwater Park, the song, is probably my fave Opeth track (it's a close run thing with 'Deliverance'.....Another excellent song and a great album too)
