Air conditioning!

I've been away...studying for exams.

Its roasting hot in my study at home and its impossible to work. I'm looking at getting a portable air conditioning unit. The only option is to have the hose pointing out of the window. But surely having a window affects its performance?

What rating of machine do I require (BTU) for a room 4m x 5m?

Thank you!

Re: Air conditioning!

Hard to say without knowing how big the windows are and if south facing etc

As a rough guide about 150 watts per square metre of floor space, so 4 x 5 = 20 metres square multiplied by 150 = 3000 watts.

nearest size aircon unit would be 3500 watts or about 12000 BTU

Mobile units are fairly noisy but are cheap.

You could drill a hole in the wall and use a tumble drier vent kit for the hose or hang it out of the window. Making a cardboard cover for the open window to seal where the pipe goes out helps reduce the warm air getting back in.

A proper split system would be best and use less electricity but costs lots more.

If you do have a split system installed Daikin are the best make.

( I know about airconditoning as I install home cinema rooms for customers and often get involved with aircon work)

Re: Air conditioning!

Mark,

The window is east facing and is ~ 1.35m x 4m.

The room is around 28-29C on average in summer because of the heat generated by lighting and my PC.

Do you think its any good?

Re: Air conditioning!

What sort of window are we talking about?

If it's a sash stick the hose out and wedge a lump of polystyrene trimmed to fit the gap and shut the window on it.  (buy a sheet at a builders yard)

If it's hinged you could get a sheet of clear acrylic or perspex, cut the hole for the nozzle and fit/wedge into the opening.

While it doesn't have to be 100% airtight the less gaps the better the efficiency will be as negative pressure in the room will just mean the warm air you're expelling will flow right back in!  Also get some duct tape as cheap mobile A/C units normally have badly fitting exhaust hoses, if you have one feel the back to see how much warm air you're pumping straight back into the room!
