28.35 million for a painting !
ART..the goverment will waver 20.5 million pounds in tax to keep a painting in the u.k.
It has only been exhibited once, the goverment have put a export ban on the PRIVATE sale.
The museum who want to purchase the said paintng say ''It would be a great revalation to the public and manet scholars ''
WE are all supposed to be in it together, well with all the cut backs and austerity. Many people loosing their
livelyhoods, living standards possibly lost forever you would think the powers that be would welcome a sizeable windfall.
But no, we must save the art.
IT does'nt matter about all the suffering and hardship that people are going through do'es it.
It just says IT'S NOT WHAT YOU KNOW, IT'S WHO YOU KNOW !
Do these people live in the real world ? I think not. They live in their world.
For the price of a day-return ticket to London I can spend a day looking at great art (valued in £Billions if that's how you value it) with nothing but a few feet of air between me and the actual canvas and pigments worked by the world's great 'masters'.
It's something I have taken for granted since I went on my first school trip to the National Gallery as a child.
You can't put a price on that.
I understand to a certain degree what your saying chebby, but one it was a private sale so surely the prescent owner has the right to sell it too whoever they choose .
ON another point i think the tax could be put to better use by say supporting nhs front line staff.
I think there would only be a select few that would veiw this certain works.

I agree as a private sale they should have the right to sell to who they want to.
The NHS has enough money it squanders without giving it any more.
Excellent quote...10/10cc
Blimey, when I first glanced at the title I thought it said: 28.35 million for painting. Cripes that's an optomistic decorator...
I do like a nice Manet, though
TBH, I'm more astounded by the amount of tax the government is 'entitled' to swipe if it's a private sale
And let's not get into the billions being invested/wasted on the Olympics, hmmmmm...
We've now paid 45 mill for a Titian.
Bless you!
We've now paid 45 mill for a Titian.
We? "we" have only contributed £5m to the cost, the rest is private money.

Public galleries are exempt from tax (so if the gallery buys it for public display, it doesn't have to pay the tax). Waived tax so the public can benefit from works of art is, IMO, a great idea.
I have some home cinema and Sonos stuff.
