For our first wedding anniversary, my husband bought me a gorgeous pair of shoes (which of course come wrapped in tissue paper). A total surprise, but a fabulous one...
Oh, and he always buys flowers, too. Can never go wrong with those!
The modern first anniversary present is a clock, so maybe an HD Freesat PVR? They have clocks on them.

Trust me - diamonds never boring. Just make sure it's in keeping with other styles of jewellery she wears (ie not too dramatic if she prefers understated, or vice versa).
