Teac 'Mini Aurb' SR-80i DAB Radio & iPod Dock
English

Hopefully, somebody else has got one of these and can offer some advice.

I was on the look out for a decent sounding DAB Radio and saw this in Richer Sounds at only £69.95 which is less than half the RRP.  DAB sounded great in the shop and I therefore took one home as it was a good price for a decent looking and sounding DAB radio, even if, like me, you was not particularly interested in the iPod dock for anything other than very occasional music listening (ie. I've got other kit for that!!).

The only thing that I do not like about the 'Mini Aurb' is the fact that after it has been in standby for anything more than a couple of hours, it defaults back to FM 87.50 and volume level 16 when switched back on (it is usually on DAB 5 Live and volume level 24 (ish!) when I put it into standby.  I phoned Teac who told me that it was working as intended (but didn't sound too convincing) and suggested that if I didn't like it, I could return it to the store.  Other than this issue, it suits my needs perfectly.

The question is therefore:  Has anybody else got one and does it behave in the same way.  If so, I will probably just put up with it but. if not, I would return it to RS as faulty.

Help please.

Oh no,

Thought it was a bit of a bargain and in demo at RS sounded great for money.(Ok starts distorting after the 24 volume range but thats quite loud anyway).

Have put a deposit down on one for the wife as a birthday present (May 13th). Its only for kitchen and ticks all our boxes in what we are after. Primarily an iPod dock but with DAB.

Will report back in a week or so.

Sorry I dont have an instant answer. I hope (no disrespect, that yours is just faulty, otherwise its going to annoy me too).

Btw is the reception / signal strength good where you are on DAB ? Also, is it a telescopic aerial or a wire jobby ? Forgot to ask when putting down deposit.

Signal strength in my area is a couple of bars over the threshold for OK reception when used in it's designated position and with the supplied wire aerial (hope that makes sense).  I also have a Pure Evoke 2 (usually in the bedroom) and that is about the same when moved to the same location.  For comparison purposes, I have also tried the Pure supplied telescopic aerial on both, again, in the designated position for the Teac, with the same results which, incidentally, were not as good as with the wire aerial.

I think that's quite good as I used to use a Cambridge DAB receiver as part of a HiFi separates system in the same position and that stopped receiving altogether after the first round of the digital switchover.  I tried a range of indoor antennae and nothing worked well enough.  An outdoor aerial might have solved the problem but I simply wasn't prepared to go that far.

Please let me know how you get on with yours when you finally get it.

Happy to answer any further quesions.

Hi,

Sorry not to reply sooner - but only gave this to the wife as a birthday pressie this weekend but been using it constantly since.

I think you might have a duffer - mines been brilliant. I have been using mine mainly for the Ipod dutys but have the DAB radio on all the time and have not encountered any issues. In fact, mine seems better than the one I demoed in Richer Sounds - it doesnt distort at high volumes unlike the one I mucked about with in the shop.

I did notice something about ECO POWER mode in the instrution manual and wondered if this was what you were encountering ? But I have not had any issues as stated. So it does not sound right to me.

I put a £10 deposit down for this unit at £79.95 which I thought was a bargain but then noticed that they put the price down further over the May Bank Holiday period (thanks to What Hi Fi for that one) to £69.95 and they honoured it at that price. So I think its brilliant value for money at that price.

I think you should take the unit back and ask for an exchange because I think its worth having. Maybe I just got lucky ???

My Richer Sounds in Maidstone have been fantastic to me over the years, so i dont think you should have any issues with exchanging it - show em this post !

Hope that helps - if anything goes wrong with mine in the meantime I will feed back but Im over the moon with it.

Thanks for that - took it back to RS Cheltenham this morning.  They will exchange it with no problem but I have to wait until next week until they get some in.

Yet again, top notch customer service from RS.

Hey ayjaycee,

Hows the replacement going ?

Im still happy with mine - lets face it, its not a Zepplin Air, but for the money its still a bargain.

A couple of pointers if anyone was thinking of buying one.

1. You get a richer sound dab wise from the Pure products, but these are usually more expensive and do go wrong from time to time.

2. Annoyingly, it wont remember your bass and treble settings, so each time you have to adjust them.

3. As stated in the WHF review, and in conjunction to point 2, you have to tone down the treble to - 4 (the lowest it will go) to tame the annoying treble (I also put the bass to + 1 to compensate).

However, other than that - for the best part of £70 - and for a bedroom or kitchen option - its brilliant.

RE: Teac 'Mini Aurb' SR-80i DAB Radio & iPod Dock

Hi guys,  Sorry for the delay in reporting back but I have been out of the country for a couple of months.

When I plugged in my replacement from RS, it behaved in exactly the same way as the previous one which I had reported as faulty - ie. it lost all settings and had to be retuned.  This persisted for the couple of weeks before I went away and was the same when I got home after nearly two months and I decided to just live with it as is.  HOWEVER, about two weeks ago, I had reason to unplug it from the mains for a couple of hours (in the evening) and did the usual retuning etc. when I plugged back in.  The weird thing is that when I turned it on the following morning, lo and behold, there it was on Radio 5 Live with all the other settings that I had left it on the day before.  I haven't done anything else to it but, since then, it has been OK every time it's turned on.  Fingers crossed for the future.

On the performance front, it's looks and sound quality for DAB alone make it easily worth the £70 - I bought it primarily as a DAB receiver rather than turning on the whole AV system to listen to the radio via Freeview or Freesat and never really use it with my iPod - I have a half decent dock (Pure i20) plumbed into the AV receiver for that.

RE: Teac 'Mini Aurb' SR-80i DAB Radio & iPod Dock

I bought the TEAC Mini Aurb SR-80i recently from a local retailer as 'open box'. They were TEAC authorised, so I felt there was little risk, plus they offered a limited guarantee. They were also selling them from an eBay store with 100% positive feedback.

Initially, I had the same problem mentioned by others, defaulting back to FM 87.50 whenever the unit was turned on, but a brief disconnection from the mains appears to have permanently fixed this (I did email TEAC twice about this, but no reply at all to date). So, no complaints about that issue for me.

So, what's the unit like? Fabulous, to my mind and I'm not even an Apple user!.

The DAB radio is crystal clear and never drops out unlike many others I've tried. The supplied wire aerial is more than adequate.

Plugging my Android phone in the 3.5mm socket via the supplied cable works fine, and the basic Android music app makes finding albums/artists reasonably easy.

USB playback is great quality but does seem quite sensitive to some USB sticks. Another niggle is that the display doesn't allow you to navigate by album or artist - ripped music just seems to appear in a numerical list based on the date is was ripped (I think). I've made a paper list of all the music on the stick so I can cross-reference the number to the artist. A bit of a pain, but worth it as the quality from the USB stock is vastly superior to a phone via 3.5mm socket.

The Aurb is being used in my kitchen, for which it has perfectly adequate power. I don't think it would fill a big sitting room. It's strange that there currently seems to be a big gap between the <£200 TEAC/Roberts devices and the £550 Ruark Audio R4i that has the power for bigger rooms. I'm hoping Azatom will bring out a well-priced powerful DAB/CD/USB/Bluetooth unit later this year...

All in all I'm pretty pleased for £60, although I wouldn't have wanted to pay much more.

Cheers

TK,  Sorry for the late response but I have been  overseas for the last three weeks.  Glad to hear that it worked out for you.  I have to say that I haven't even tried to plug anything else into my Aurb so far but do believe that it was worth the £70 I paid to Richer for a decent DAB radio on it's own. For what it's worth, I am now 9 months down the line with mine and the original defaulting issue has not rerurned.

As an aside, I recently bought a Revo Axis for the kitchen - what a brilliant little piece of kit it is.  It gives DAB & Internet radio, audio streamer and IPod dock which sounds great at decent volume in the kitchen environment all from a box that's way less half the size of a shoe box.
