Can somebody please explain if it is posible to select multiple contacts before returning to the text message?  With my previous Sony Erricson I could tick boxes of all the contacts I wished to send the sms.  Every time I select a contact with my iphone I return to the main message and have to then return to contacts to select another contact.  It is really quite frustrating.  Thanks for your assistance.

If memory serves - once you're on the sms screen you click on the '+' in the To field to add a contact. Click on that area of the screen again to add more contacts. (I think the + disappears after 1st contact - but you still click on the area where it was).

Thanks Tech Mad.  What you have explained is what I normally do.  I was hoping to be able to select multiple contacts at the same time before returning to the text message.

If you have a regular group of people you want to text, you can download an app called Tacts - this will let you create a group of people from your Contacts list and then choose a Group Message (or a Group Email). In here, you can then deselect some members you don't want to receive that text, so there's some flexibility in it too.

There may well be other apps which let you do exactly what you want to do of course, so worth having a search around on the App Store to see what there is.
