iTunes to new laptop HELP

Just bought my own first computer a laptop and I’m unsure how to get my iTunes library onto it. At the moment I access my itunes library off our desktop and all the music is stored on an external hard drive. I want to get iTunes and all my music onto my laptop and use the external hard drive only as a back-up. I want the laptop to be the main way to access iTunes. Our house is networked.
Do I have to start again and copy all my music to the laptop and then into iTunes or is there a short cut I can use.
I have over 100Gb on my iPod and in iITunes and would prefer not to start again.
