MP3 into stereo

I am thinking of playing my MP3 player through the Aux input of my stereo amp using a 3.5mm jack to RCA interconnect. However, I was once told that putting an amplified signal into a stereo amp can cause damage. Is this likely to be a problem? Any advice would be appreciated.
