Denon D-M35DAB + ASD-1R - no control?

Hi guys - and compliments of the season to all!

 I've got a Denon D-M35DAB, and am trying to control my iPod through the ADR-1R. I have attached it both to the TAPE & AUX outputs, and connected it to the SYSTEM CONNECTOR 1 & 2 ports, and tried all the settings for the switch on the dock, but I can't get any control from the Denon remote. I've tried two different iPods of different types, both loaded with up-to-date software.

 Am I missing something obvious?!
