As you're probably aware, Apple has agreed exclusive deals with network providers in the US and UK - AT&T and o2 respectively - that stop other networks working on the iPhone. At least for the immediate future. But it seems French laws forbid this sort of arrangement. So while Apple has agreed a deal with Orange for its iPhone, it must by law also make unlocked iPhones available to French consumers... How much more these unlocked iPhones will be remains to be seen, but if you really, really want an iPhone without joining o2... Hmmm.

Of course, there's always this option from our friends over on Stuff.
