How about the guy who had his 'gobsmackingly expensive' speaker cables running over empty 2 litre plastic bottles because they 'added focus' (you could almost here the writer laughing to himself) to the soundstage.

Was this Lee the fella who had all this high-end gear in an impossibly-tiny bedroom and there was some comment in the article that when you took a few steps across his room you reached the wall at the the other side (or something similar)

I hear he's a refuse collector in Slough now running a Logitech iPod dock.

One article I always remember (albeit vaguely now) was of one guy in Japan who was after a pure sound and ran his equipment of batteries. There was a fair number (something like 200 but I am not sure) and he had to replace them (which involved soldering) every month!!
Now that is taking it to extremes!
