i got my first one in about 1983 , xmas present from my parents , i absolutely loved it , at the time it was cutting edge

i must have had it for ten years , with no problems , they dont make em like that anymore , when it finally packed up , the mid nineties i think , i got one of these

much better sound , id travel around london by bus , even though it was slower , just to see the sights while listening to music , happy days (im not sure it done my hearing much good though , that mega bass was loud)..

More Sony Walkman nostalgia in our blog from Sony''s Walkman museum

PS - I'm moving this thread to the 'I Remember When' section

I used to have the Sony WM-D6C 'Pro' Walkman with a Rega Planar 3/Goldring 1042/QED A-240-SA amp and Mordaunt Short Carnival 3 speakers. (The old ones with the all-round 'stocking')

Nice little system that.

My big brother really wanted one, but was told "the Sony one [was] too expensive".

He asked Santa for the generic, but (being 6) couldn't spell personal.

He, instead, requested a "percy snail stereo".  Bless!

I still use my sony walkman WM-d6c daily ... I have loads of cassettes ...

I often get strange looks on the tube/bus from the younger generation with their latest iphones and ipods ....

but what the heck, still sounds good to me and works flawlessly

Re: the original sony walkman ....

I used to use something similar to the 2nd one when Id just left school

I loved it but it did have its drawbacks, I recall being jumped by a drug dealer which I never heard coming due to the big headphones I was using (Listening to Metallica probably didnt help either Stick out tongue)

Ohhhh how id love to see him again...........

Re: the original sony walkman ....

I remember my Sister having the first one when I was a kid with blue headphones and I was well jealous of her having it - so I used to hide it from her lol.

Then I got my first proper box/ghettoblaster so I used to blast her out with that ! I carried my music on my shoulder.

Re: the original sony walkman ....

I had one of the originals but in black with carry case my sister brought back from Hong Kong. I knocked two holes into the wall either side of my bed / pillow and mounted in two car speakers and connected them via a made up headphone jack. Great memories.

Not sure my dad was too happy when I left home, had some filling to do.

Re: the non-original sony walkman ....

Had one of these for a few years from 2001. The all metal case had a really pleasing heft to it.
