MY HIFI in the 90's
1991 i brought a pioneer A400 stereo amp (the classic!) , PDS801 pioneer cd player, later added a F502rds tuner pioneer. Mission 780 speakers. Audioquest type 4 speaker cable at a total cost of £920 i remember. This system is as new still as i passed it on to my brother whos recently emmigrated to NZ and is using the missions as is fronts which his new cinem,a setup with the yamaha RX-V667 and klipsh 5.1 setup. The A400 sounds great with the missions even at todays standards its not dated at all and its 18yrs old!
late '70s, almost 2 Naim monoblocks (I can't remember the model) and KEF 104ab and QUAD preamp, given back though to the retailer to get a more reasonable for my age set-up which was made up of a Luxman L3 amp, Luxman pd272 turntable, Tangent Rs2 speakers (the old english brand not the current danish one). Funny?
Mid 90's I bought the Pioneer Precision amp and the Precision CD player - partnered them with a pair of Castle Harlech floorstanders! Fantastic sound! Interconnects and speaker cables were all Audioquest which at that time were just the best - has Diamond interconnects and Midnight 2 speaker cables which were the thickness of garden hoses!
I also bought the first ever Sony widescreen CRT tv (only the 16 inch for the bedroom) and I still have it in working condition...
I remember our hi-fi in the 90s - Pioneer A400 (sold in droves back then!), Mission 780SE, target speaker stands, Pioneer TX9800 (never replaced the tuner as this was a beauty), Pioneer CT-F1250 cassette deck (same story) and cable talk speaker cable. Sounded great with Def Leppard or Bryan Adams on a Saturday night.. !
I was a teenager in the 90s but in about 1995 I remember having a Sony CDP-597 CD player, Rotel RA-920AX amp, and B&W DM302 speakers (the ones with the prisms inside them). It was a really good little system and I listened to a lot of music for the first time on that set-up.
I too bought a Pioneer A400 and Cyrus 780 (rename to Mission 780 later) to use with my portable discman.
Later added a Marantz CD63 to make a complete system.
Sounds great for my limited budget.
Don't recall a Mission 780SE then though. ![]()
Also i later i brought a cassette deck from an auction. It was a pioneer 6 cassette multichanger with remote. I think with dolby B/C and HX pro. An amazing bit of kit. Pioneer i believe made two mine was the higher spec of the two i recall. I remember you could swap or change the other 5 cassettes while playing one. I believe was even rare even when manufactured! I assume this was made early 90s to not sure! Amzing bit of kit though!
Is still the same as it is today...
Minus the Denon of course...
chebby:
I've still got one of those, cracking little radio, it's served me well through the years.
I had the Marantz CD63 in the 90's too. My parents use it now.....
Also had the Pioneer A605R amp and a pair of Tannoy DC2000's......
Great speakers, but were sold on ebay for £144 a few year back as my wife didn't like the look of them.....![]()
Another Marantz CD63 KI Signature owner here too - it replaced a Rotel RCD 820 and Deltec Little Bit DAC, and lasted me until 2003.
The rest of my gear through the 90s comprised a Linn Axis turntable with K9 cartridge, an Ion Obelisk 300 pre-power combo (which replaced the Cyrus shoe-box style Obelisk 3), a Technics cassette deck (can't remember the model) and Linn Helix speakers, replaced in '94 by the Keilidhs which lasted me well until last September when I bought the Elites.
Ah, memories...
I had an aiwa micro system (CD, tape, radio) and loved it to bits - both the look and the sound. It is still working - at my friend's house.
It was very small and was split in two square-shaped blocks (just a bit wider than a cd each) + 2 speakers. so you could put it up as a 'tall and narrow' or a 'low and wide' arrangement. It also had an unusually wide remote control unit.
edit: got the remote, but not the system intself. Anybody had the same?

Cannot find any pics of it whatever search I try - but it was very nicely styled for my taste.
Aiwa XR-MS3 maybe?

Nope! I think mine was 'before' that one.
It was matt black, with yellowish lights. the tape unit had horisontal level meter made of these yellow lights.
Can't beleive I cannot find a pic anywhere!
I think my F-I-L still has exactly what you mention. I bought it from a car boot sale for him about 4/5 years ago for a fiver.
I'll see if I can get a photo for you!
