Memories of Laskys

Bought my very first VHS VCR from Lasky in Cambridge - was a Tashika  - terrible now when i think back.

My first memory of Lasky's was queueing up for what seemed like forever as a little kid.....while my mum got Noel Edmonds autograph at the Manchester branch!

Happy Days.

Yeah bought my first proper hifi separates, Technics, amp, cd, tape deck and speakers and they threw in 10 cd's for free one of which was the Fine young canibals (the young and the cooked) from the tottenham court road branch remember having to go to collect it from their offsite warehouse on the other side of the road as they were short staffed at the time.

Bought my first CD player from the Newcastle branch in summer 1986. I used to go in shirt sleeves from work at lunchtime and people were always asking questions as they thought I worked there!

It's now a Vision Express.

I remember visiting my uncle in London as a small boy and being taken into town on the Northern line. While the family spent the morning seeing the sights my uncle and I spent the morning on the Tottenham Court road and spent at least an hour in Laskys.

Other than that it was mail order for me via their ad in Practical Electronics (They were a big component supplier as well if I remember.) 

I built my first amp and converted a Dynatron record player from mono to stereo. (I'm ashamed to say I mounted the amp in the second speaker cabinet that I bought!!) The Garrad deck on the record player was wired for stereo and had the RCA plug already on the back for the second channel. - Happy days.

Ah... Lasky's in Manchester (near Deansgate I think).  Great shop - listened to (and fell in love with) the Gale loudspekers with the chrome caps that you could use either upright or sideways on the stands.  Never managed to acquire a pair but remember being transfixed as a student in the 70s drooling over these as the wafted classical piano music around the store ...  But I did buy my Sennheiser 414 headphones there.

Also, I remember seeing a pair of AR speakers. they were very high end and well out of my price-range.

I hankered after a top-end Pioneer amp, Thorens TT, AR speakers - these were all sold at Laskys. The only one I ever achieved from the list was a mid-range Pioneer....such is life.

I worked at the Sheffield branch  between 1977 and 1978 ; it was a crazy time and a crazy experience . The only good thing to come out of it was that I met my future wife who worked in the shop next door .......

Ahh yes fond memories here too! I remember it well Summer 1976, bought a Trio 1033 TT (I think that was the model number) together with a JVC JAS-11 amp to partner a huge pair of Rank Audio 3 way floorstanders (more like large wardrobes )

Brought my first speakers from the Brum branch, Kef Coda III's and my first cassette deck which was an Awia when I was 17, can't remember the model. I do remember they were the first to stock the Marantz CD player, the gold top-loader. Blimey talk about 'down memory lane'.

What with Lasky's and Reddingtons Rare Records, when it was down the underpass, these were two of my favourite haunts.

Oh good grief! Laskys! Now there's a blast from the past. Yes, I remember them. I lived in the NE then so had to rely on their ads and, does anyone remember, they did a sort of advertising "newspaper" thing.  I used to pore over that. As a teenager I could probably recite the spec of anything I might reasonably lust after. Note I didn't say "afford". The pounds mounted up slowly from that Saturday job. And then one day I made it to London. Went down TCR. Wow!!

Still got the bug. There's no cure apparently. Thank goodness!
