Fond memory of TDK cassettes

I may be in danger of being mocked here but I do have very fond memories of older TDK cassette tapes from the 80s - the ones with black enclosures before cassettes all started to be enclosed in clear plastic.

I feel this has something to do with the fact that this was the last period that tapes were the best and a serious option for home recording and playing in the car and I was using tapes extensively (just before minidisc and CDRs etc). The process (almost "occasion") of playing a tape being almost that of vinyl on a high end deck (I had a Pioneer CT-F1250) was great and I always liked the sound when well set-up. It's a shame many of our cassette decks have been resigned to the loft but that's progress after all! Alex

My overriding memory of cassettes, regardless of brand, was one of overwhelming frustration, especially 120 minute ones which always tangled inside the player.

lots of fond memories of cassettes, loved making mixtapes for friends and family, also sitting next to the radio listening to the top 40 on a sunday evening, used to record all the songs and then when the dj started talking again put on pause.Listened to the top 40 all week and helped me choose what vinyl to buy.

the ones I liked most were the ones with little reels inside.

for some reason they usually featured in brochure shots of the gear rather than in reality. Coudl not find any images of them on the net - aprt from this one.

Still have several cases full of cassettes in the loft from my student days - can't bear to part with them, even though I no longer own a cassette deck.

Yeah I've got a ton of them, I had many years where I only bought stuff on cassette (CD was out of reach for a young lad like me), a lot of which isn't available on CD anymore, so I can't listen to any of it.

Does anyone still make a decent tape deck, one with USB if poss for ripping to the PC?

Yes you, you're a nice guy and that but some of the threads you start are almost legendary in their pointlessness, much like this one, although I have now asked a question I'd like answering in this one at least, so it's not all bad...

most threads are just an opportunity for people to interact and exchange whitty comments, pass the time, etc.. the subject matter isnt at all relevant half the time..and in the case of my threads in the ot&m section, you will often notice one of theseStick out tongue, indicating its all about the craic, and that aint dullWink

And you'd be right not to be, even without the dull bit, "nice" is a living death as far as women are concerned, I was "nice" for 20 years when I was younger, gets you nowhere, now it doesn't matter, I'm too damn ugly to be of any interest...

It is if the subject is so pointless there's nothing to actually discuss... to be fair to the OP at least this one was vaguely hi-fi related.

Re: Fond memory of TDK cassettes

All of my old cassette decks (brace of Technics, Sony WM-6DC, Yamaha KX-580) all behaved impeccably. In fact two - the Sony and the Yamaha - are still in regular use.

I never used any other brand than TDK (SA, AD, SA-X and AD-X) and used a TDK head cleaner and - occasionally - a TDK de-magnetiser.

I only ever used distilled water on cotton buds to clean the rubber 'pinch wheels' for fear of them 'perishing' or going out shape. (Developing 'bald' spots from use of alcohol on the rubber instead of water).

In 26 years I never had a tape get jammed or unspool itself inside a machine. But then I only ever used 90 or 100 length and never C120. I also ensured every cassette was spooled to the end of a side before putting it away (always in it's case) and always 'tensioned' the tape by pressing rewind before playing it. I also never left a tape 'paused' for more than a few minutes. (Again, I didn't want the non-rotating capstan pressed up against the pinch roller for too long in case it deformed.)

A wee bit obsessive I suppose but I never lost a recording and my precautions never really took much time.
