BK lets you demo the sub for upto 35 days at home as far as I'm aware. Check with them (they're closed until 4th August).

But return shipping at about £30-40 if I didn't want it is a bit of a high price for a demo I think

Well, it is about 43kg.

Well, it is about 43kg. Personally, I won't mind paying return postage as I'm more likely to keep it than return.

If you prefer Dali's looks,

If you prefer Dali's looks, demo it (should be easy to demo as compared to BK). If you like it, buy it. If you don't, get the BK on home demo.

For the budget of your Dali,

For the budget of your Dali, check this one:

http://www.savi-store.co.uk/product/velodyne-spl-800i-subwoofer-spl-800i?gclid=CKfaxL3J478CFeTItAodpBUAhQ

This will be far superior and 4 times more powerful.

Yes, Velodyne are subwoofer specialists who have somehow managed to achieve big bass in compact units. And they're very successful.
