Spend more on av receiver or speakers?
I'm just starting out on the av journey and am wondering what I should spend more on - av receiver or speakers. I assume that poor quality input to good speakers and good quality input to poor speakers will end up with the same result ? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I think most will agree the norm is 40/60 amp/speakers, however do lots of demos of different combinations to see what you personally like.
Many ppl on these forums will be able to advise which amp partners which speakers the best.

I have a different opinion on the budget mix for your entertainment system, and I beleive the advice i had from my assistant at the shop last month made sence...
He said the once you are an audiophile you will eventually upgrade, whether its in a year or 5 years, but one thing that does not change are the speakers, they dont devalue in price nor gain, but a new speaker currently at around £500 will be £500 in 5 years time to buy new. Speakers can last you a life time, your AV receiver can be upgraded to get better sound out of your speakers.
So with this analogy, i would actually spend as much on speakers as you can, with an ok amp that will run the speakers you want within your current budget.
My mix was 24% Amp the rest speakers/stands/cables
Can't be happier with my set-up and I know i can improve easily in the future by upgrading my AV amp when i can afford it again...

It depends on more than just a simple ratio IMO and I would constrain your decision this way. The level of sound you are considering will play an important part. A £2k receiver can happily run a £5k speaker set and beyond.
I would pick your speakers first if you have to consider their appearance or positioning and then work to the best amp you can within your budget.
Thanks guys. Thats a great help. I'll put more emphasis on the speakers on the premis that a good set will get the best out of the amp. As you say, I can always upgrade the amp at a later date when budget allows...
