Sony BDP-370 worst than PS3

Why is my Sony BDP-370 worst than my PS3.It could be the settings PS3 goes through an Onkyo 606 to my Samsung 40f86 lcd using Chord HDMI, and i connected the Sony 370 straight to the tv using the same hdmi cable. When playing Master and Commander the picture was as sharp more washed out and more screen noise.The black banding at the top and bottom of the screen also increased by 1.5cm. Dvd does not look very good compared to my Toshiba XDE lacking the sharpness and vibrancy when playing LOTR the Fellowship. Yes the sound quality is an improvement, but i did expect it to be slighty better than the PS3, Could anyone help me with settings or tell me what might be wrong, i mean they look simple enough perhaps im missing something.Thanks for your replies.
