Replacing Denon AVR-2310 with AVR-2312 advice

I am considering upgrading my Denon avr-2310 with an avr-2312. I will probably be upgrading my TV in the next few months and may end up going 3D so it would be nice to have a receiver that can support hdmi 1.4 which the 2310 wont. I realise that Denon have just released a new range of receivers but I dont like the look of these and prefer the display layout of the older range where it clearly shows how many channels are coming in and going out.

I know the 2312 looses the pre outs and 2 speaker channels but these are never likely to be used by myself anyway. I am trying to find out what else I would loose or gain by moving to the 2312.

As always any advice is appreciated.

I was in exactly the same situation as you with the denon 2310 and decided to buy the panosonic dBt310 it has two hdmi out puts one for sound one for picture so you can have you amp running the sound and a direct 3d picture to the screen

Agreed. It's far cheaper to go for a blu ray player with twin HDMI ports, like Sony S790. You'll be upgrading your blu ray player for 3D anyways.

Or the Panasonic DMP-BDT500, which incidentally also has 7.1 multichannel analogue outputs, so you could use those to take the sound to the receiver and then use one of the HDMI outputs to the television.

Your Denon AVR-2310 receiver (like its smaller brother the Denon AVR-1910 - which I used to own until I gave it away to a dear friend when I got their bigger brother the Denon AVR-4810) was an unqualified success at its price point, both getting 5-star reviews in What Hi-Fi. I'm not sure that all their successors, now two generations later, have garnered such universal praise. Certainly I can't seem to find a 5-star review of the AVR-2312. As others have said, it's not necessary to change the receiver to get a 3D picture from a Blu-ray player to your television. Don't get rid of the AVR-2310 receiver. It was, and remains, very good.

And speaking of 7.1 multichannel analogue connections from, for example, the Panasonic DMP-BDT500 Blu-ray player, the 2310 has inputs for these (I've just checked on the Denon UK website), but the 2312 does not, one of the economies that I guess Denon had to make in reducing the roughly £800 price of the old AVR-2310 to the approximately £550 that the AVR-2312 currently costs. And, this is not important to you just now regarding upgradeability but you never know what you might want in future, another reduction of specification of the 2312 compared to the earlier 2310 is that the 2312 now has no analogue audio preouts (except for the subwoofers) whereas your 2310 has a full set of 7.1 analogue pre-outs, as well as a full set of 7.1 multichannel analogue audio inputs.

Did I mention earlier that you shouldn't get rid of your AVR-2310 (especially not for the AVR-2312)?? I'm not sure that that would be an upgrade, rather than a move (at best) sideways.

This is to formally acknowledge that the monetary value of the coaching that you have recently been doing

Of course, Panasonic BDT500 & Pioneer LX55 are options. I don't see much point in 7.1 analogue connections when the Denon can perfectly accept an HDMI audio signal.

And to be honest I have used the 3d on my panosonic about twice and never all the way through a film, bit of a gimmick if you ask me and I am a nerd that likes that sort of thing.  I think to get the benefit of 3d the picture has to be massive not 40-50inches.

Thanks for the advice guys, I have decided to keep the AVR-2310 and just buy a blu-ray with a dual HDMI. Am I right in thinking I would have to run a cable from the avr-2310 hdmi out to a spare hdmi on the tv to see the GUI from the reciever on the tv?

Yes, one HDMI from the player to TV, & the other from the player to receiver.

Am I right in saying it is generally and specifically in this case and with my Yamaha 2065 and Sony 570, better to use the amp dac / digital out from bdp rather than the bdp dac / analogue out from bdp?

Cheers

In OP's case, yes. Depends on the quality of DAC in your BDP.
