Problem connecting subwoofer to Onkyo TX-SR605 AV Receiver. Help please!
English

I had an all in one Sony surround sound system that I got free with my Sony HD TV. However it had no digital inputs and I wanted to connect the PS3. All the surround speakers connected to the Onkyo but I obviously needed a new subwoofer.

The problem I have is that I have now tried 3 different powered subwoofers and can get no sound from any of them. The latest is the Wharfedale WDHX-160SSP.

I have tried connecting with both a coaxial digital audio cable and also with a basic phono cable. Neither work. I have tried various calibration settings from -3db to +3db and at various volume settings on the subwoofer from about a quarter all the way to full. It goes without saying that I have tried all the various combinations of the above. I have set the system to 5.1 (correctly) and (in config) I have set the subwoofer to 'Yes'. Audyssey recognises all of the other speakers. I am connecting via the subwoofer pre out on the Onkyo but have also tried the other subwoofer connection, to no avail.

Please help, I have the distinct feeling I am probably missing something very obvious.

In advance: Thank you

do you have another amp you could rig the sub to, just to check it's definately the amp. could be the amp's got a faulty sub channel had the same problem with an old denon amp first the left channel and then the centre took it to ortons in hitchin and they sent it away to be fixed personally if it's new and under warranty give onkyo a ring ask them to walk through the settings for sub output and if it still does'nt work tell them to sort it out for you don't attempt to take it apart on anyones advice if under warranty as this will void it

Please double-check you're connecting to the 'Sub out' rather than the 'Sub in' multichannel inputs.

(I'm not being funny, but I did this exact thing the first time I set my stuff up! Embarrassed Hey! It's hard to see what's what when you're peering down a 2 inch gap upside down! Wink)

Can't find any reference to the that sub - where did you get it from?

This thread may help with some general advice.

Thanks for your sterling work so far guys, here are some pics oif the offending sub of which I can find absolutely noe reference or mention of any where in the web either !!!! I've tried connecting it to the left output on the sub, rather than the coaxial with  a subwoofer cable to no avail . Could I be using the wrong sort of cable?

p.s.  Actually, I can't see any way to insert or attach the photos I've taken of the subwoofer!  Double help please!  Sad

ok do you mean left input on your sub, in which case i take it you have 1 output on the amp, not a left and right and on the sub a left and right.

if thats the case you need to buy a interconnect that goes from 1 in to 2 my set up is exactly the same as a quick fix i got a cheapie freebie connect split down the middle to leave 1 cable to use then went to maplins and bought a 1 into 2 cable think it was a shark one used for car stereo. does the job though may get a dedicated 1 to do the job soon suggestions anyone?

Re: Problem connecting subwoofer to Onkyo TX-SR605 AV Receiver.

Thanks for all the help so far.  I must point out that I am relatively new to all this and have no real technical expertise.  Please assume that my knowledge is negligible, as it will make communication (both ways) somewhat easier.  Smile

The (unknown) subwoofer has 4 inputs.  These are:  optical, coaxial, left and right.

The Onkyo receiver has one main subwoofer output and another one which no one ever recommends using (although I have tried both).

As stated before, I have tried most of the advice given both on these forums as well as from others, all to no avail.  I will try the interconnect option, as advised.  If anybody has any further help it would be appreciated.

Alternatively, if all else fails, could anyone recommend a decent subwoofer that would DEFINITELY work with the Onkyo, along with any necessary instructions, eg what sort of cables would I need and to which outputs/inputs would I connect.  My maximum budget would be £150, though would be happier paying under £100 as I have already tried 3 subwoofers so far.

In anticipation, thank you.

Please can anyone give an opinion on the Gale Storm subwoofer especially in regard to whether it is compatible with the ONKYO 605 0r not ! Any suggestions on a similarly priced sub unit would also be welcome.

Thanks

Sounds odd that your sub has an optical input. Do you know anyone local to you with a decent sub you could try hooking up? Also, just check on the onk setup menus that the sub is actually turned on.
