In the future I will hopefully be running the front L R speakers with two monoblocks with a seperate pre/cd. When watvhing films how will this configuration affect the whole 5.1 setup's sound?

Probably make it sound bloody fantastic (or rather, even more fantastic)!

I'm hoping to eventually to do the exact same thing with my front three (the monoblocs I mean) - I keep drooling over the new Anthem M1's, but I'd have to sell the wife to even think about them (Hmm . . . . just a minute! twisted).

Back to your set-up though, if you use your av reciever as the preamp, it sould be fairly seemless, just analogue outs to the monoblocs. I'm not quite sure how a seperate preamp would fit in though, you might need to look at some sort of speaker switch to change between stereo and home cinema duties?
