Newbie out of depth – any help appreciated….
Hi all, after looking at loads of online content and been reading What hi-fi for a couple of months I’m still not finding all the answers I need. PPPlllllease help!
I’m just buying my first house and set myself a strict budget for my home entertainment goods. But… I got a little carried away and decided that I didn’t actually need wardrobes or carpets and the money would be better spent on the cool stuff in your magazine
. So, I have bought what is hopefully a good base system, it is……
-
TV – Sharp LC46XD1E
-
Amp – Yamaha DSP AX759SE
-
Surround Sounds Speakers – KEF KHT 1005
-
DVD Player – Pioneer DV 600AV K
-
All with quite reasonable cables
Now the bits I’m confused about……
For info…. Absolute maximum I have left to spend on my setup is £400 though obviously if I can spend less that would be great.
I have managed to secure a free Xbox with my new mobile phone contract which I’m tempted to trade in for a Playstation 3, this would cost me about £200. If I do this I have read the great reviews on the ONKYO TX SR605 with the HDMI inputs, which used in conjunction with the Playstation should give some good results. I only bought the Yamaha very recently and it’s not yet open. The supplier seems very good and I expect I’ll be able to take it back and pay the extra for the ONKYO, will likely cost the rest of my £400 budget. But will the ONKYO be wasted with my speakers?
However, option 2….. I would also like a set of floor standing speakers so I can implement 7.1. If I spend £200 on the Playstation 3 upgrade and £200 on a set of speakers, will the speakers be any good for that sort of money? And will my existing amp work ok with the Playstation 3, will I still get a 7.1 output from the Playstations optical output whilst connecting the HDMI output straight to the TV? I understand I won't get lossless audio but will this be noticeable with the level of equipment? Is there anything else I need to consider?
And lastly if I upgrade to a Playstation 3, will I still need the DVD player or is it largely redundant? (I’ve heard the Playstation 3 isn’t great at playing cd’s)??
Sorry this want on a bit but I’m worried about making some pretty big mistakes.
Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated.
Andy
