Ok, so you've probably seen hundreds of posts exactly like this one.

I've decided to buy the Sony 55HX8 series television, I'm also thinking of getting the Onkyo TX-NR515 Trouble is, I don't know where to begin as to matching equipment so that's why I'm here. Does that amp even go with the television? Also, what speakers would go with that amp? I'm not after ear destroying volume as I live in a flat and would quite like to stay on (reasonably) good terms with the neighbours so a nice even crisp sound would be good.

I was thinking maybe those DALI Zensor 5 5.1's? But again.I don't know whether to get floor standers or not. It might be worth mentioning that my flat is an L shape but the seating area is basically 3.5m deep by 4.5m wide (my sofa will be along the long edge so my viewing distance is 3.5m give or take) Also, one side of the flat where the sofa is, is under the eaves so I can't mount anything to the left or right walls either side of the sofa.

I have a budget of around 2K for amp and speakers and blu-ray, although I'm happy to get the blu-ray at a later date if it means a better overall system in the end (I was planning on the Sony BDP-S790)

Also wondering if there are specific types of cables I need to get for the speakers and will they be different to the amp cable and TV cable? Or do I just get a HDMI from the television to the back of the amp etc? As you can probably see. I'm completely new to the world of home cinema, and quite possibly the 21st century........

I apologise in advance for the barrage of questions and thank anyone for their assistance Smile

RE: It's all new!

I just bought an Onkyo TX-NR616 a couple of weeks ago it has a fantastic sound quality with both movies/tv and music very crisp, detailed and excellent surround effects you really hear every last detail in the soundtrack. As far as I'm aware you don't need to worry about matching your tv with the amp as the amp will only pass the picture to the tv. I have a Sony EX703 tv and the picture from the amp is slightly better (mostly better blacks and a hint more clarity) than directly connected to the source but it does depend on what I'm watching sometimes I can't see any difference. On Wednesday I bought the Bowers & Wilkins HTM62 centre and the 685 fronts and they sound incredible with the Onkyo amp the dialougue is very clear and has a well balanced tone. Standmounters might be better for the neighbours. As for cables you will need speaker cable to run from the amp to all the speakers and a HDMI cable between the tv and amp then everything that you plug into the tv now will plug into the amp.

Thank you very much for the reply. I didn't know an amp could give a different picture, I always assumed it was just something speakers needed to plug into..... I shall have a look at those speakers you mentioned too. I've kind of just been using Whathifi magazine to try and work out what goes with what.

RE: It's all new!

Hey there, just wanted to warn you that these Onkyo receivers are riddled with reliability problems. I got an Onkyo TX-NR616 2 wks ago and have had 4 video out problems where no picture shows only sound. Many others have this issue too if you search for peoples comments online. Some I've read do work ok but it seems a gamble as I'm now sending mine back after such a short time.

When mine works the sound and picture is amazing and am sooo disappointed to be returning it. Now I have to figure out a good alternative puzzled

Don't want to put a downer on your new plans, just wanted to inform you of my experience

Pretty safe with 2nd hand speakers on Ebay or Gumtree I recon. New maybe for electronics (IMO).

Cheers
