Improve the sound on my new Samsung 40" - Could small/cheap actives help?

I have finally taken the leap from an old Sony Wega 32" to a new Samsung UE40ES. In doing so I have also parted ways with my old 5.1 system (it was just too big) so am on the lookout for something to help bolster the apparently badd sound quality from the Samsung.  I was thinking/hoping that a pair of actives as L/R could work assuming the audio out will allow it.  Are there any cheap, read £50 or so, actives out there, or something else that would do similar?
