Hello all,

I am a complete newbie when it comes to home cinema and really need your help.

I have Sky HD (hdmi & optical), Playstation 3 (hdmi), Samsung 40" (forgot the model), Onkyo 875 and 5.1 surround speakers.

My questions are with my Onkyo 875

1) I have set it all up using the funny little microphone auto set up thingy, but now the audyssey light is on all the time, i found this in the set up - what is it and should I leave it on or turn it off?

2) When watching something with Dolby Digital or DTS the onkyo automatically changes to the right sound format, but what should it be on the rest of the time - Direct, All Ch Stereo or multichannel (what is multichannel ?)

3) When will / should I get to use the THX formats?

4) what is Pure Audio?

I won't ask about the HD formats yet as I can't even work out the normal ones for my sky, dvd's or games. I only have casino royale on blu ray anyway.

Sorry for being a bit dumb about these things but have previously just listened to everything through my TV and do not have a clue about any of this.

Any help greatly appreciated but please answer the questions as if you were explaining it to your Wife, Mum or a 5 year old, whchever the most clueless.

Thank you

I'll take Mum please, Bob.

There there dear, you have got yourself in a state, haven't you? Sit down, have a nice cuppa and let's see whether we can sort it out...

That shows the equalisation set during the automatic set-up is being applied to the sound. Turn it off and you go back to the uncorrected sound.

Whichever setting you feel gives the best sound. Personally I tend to run my 875 in PLIIx Music for watching Sky, and Direct for radio. You can select the preferred mode for each input in the Audio set-up menu. Multichannel selects the multichannel analogue inputs, which you might use for examplw with a Blu-ray or HD DVD player with onboard decoding and digital to analogue conversion. It's not relevant with the source components you have.

Whenever you like - THX basically just applies some re-equalisation to the sound to give a better balance - try it when watching surround movies and see whether you like it.

The Pure Audio setting shuts down the receiver's display and all the video outputs apart from HDMI, to give minimal interference to the sound.

Another cup, dear, and perhaps a Lincoln biscuit..?

Does that mean your mum is more clueless than a 5 year old?

Just one more question, I read in another thread about the set-up for the PS3 for playing True HD from the PS3, but what should my Onkyo be set to if connected by HDMI? is it Direct?

Thanks

Given that my mother is, I think, 76, or possibly 75, then it's a safe bet she's more clueless than the average five year old when it comes to setting up an Onkyo TX-SR875.

Yup, that'll do nicely. Or you should be able to select True HD on the surround menu if that's coming off the disc and down the HDMI.

I tried selecting True HD on the receiver when playing 300 on Blu Ray (the only title I have with True HD on) and couldn't, so left it on Direct. I assume you can only select True HD if using the receiver to decode it, which you can't currently do using a PS3.
